The file icon is a vector made in Illustrator, made by me, so everything is freely editable. The only thing that isn't a vector is the cone image.

That's good. Shall I do small resolution versions for Windows? I'd be good if you could provide the illustrator file.
At least for the 16x16 resolution a standalone icon needs to be made.

I've edited the drop shadow to be lighter:

Let me know what you think. I've tried removing the stroke (gray border), but it didn't look good.. I could try to make the stroke width smaller if you don't like the version above..

I'm currently working on the smaller version. Concerning the shadow, I compared different versions and it turns out that I like your original shadow best. So let's keep it that way if you have nothing against it.

No problem, I can change it back easily.. I made a small improvement over the current design: the shadow I made for the folded part (top-right) was flowing over outside of the icon, which is fixed now. I'll upload the ones that, IMO, are final:

Awesome! They look VERY good!

I'm playing around with the drop shadow some more, I'll let you know when I've uploaded the updated Illustrator documents

[edit] Okay I totally reworked the drop shadow, making it virtually indistinguishable from the base OS X filetype icons!
I've re-uploaded the vector images to the URL I've given you before.

I didn't find a good representation of the playlist notes that fit into a 16x16 icon, so I left it blank.
Are they good as they are or do you propose changes?

I think they're perfect the way they are! The playlist icon is one of the least used icons, so I don't think it'll be a problem that it misses a distinguishable 16x16 representation.

Also, LeoNico mentioned that his cone icon was made with Photoshop (1024x1024 px), it wasn't a 3D render ;)

[edit] these are made based on the old versions of the vectors right? I see some things that I thought I'd corrected in these icons you posted...

Yes they were. 256x256 icons updated to your new shadow. You're doing the Mac OS X icons yourself aren't you?

@vlc_fan-01: I don't really like these new 3D badge icons of yours, they don't really fit with any other file type icons out there.
Ah really that's your opinion :) They kinda do look like application icons don't they

Well I wanted to be more creative and was looking at the file type icons done by KM Player, GOM PLayer and Foobar2k which also wouldn't conform to standard looking file type icons, but really are they supposed to? There media player icons look awesome. I just wanted to do something different from the document image for a change, so VLC really stands out more.

Lopoz's icons are fine, but didn't the admin say to avoid "Audio" "Video" as English text because of international langauge users out there. If the text was sadly removed then there also would be no proper distinction between the audio and the playlist but I know that can be sorted easily.

altglass, I know you used Axialis to convert those PNG's but maybe the orginal PNG image needed some configuration in it's width compared to other Windows size icons since I experienced the same when converting also. Look:

Well if all of you were to ever change your minds then I have the original PNG's (3D Badge icons) which I could post up here

btw.. I could change the Video camcorder to just a filmstrip on the red 3D icon. Still good to know that VLC is getting proper file type icons for the first time.

I think Icon Composer did a pretty good job downsizing these. Let me know if you disagree..

why is there a subtitle icon? Does VLC reads subtitles without the movie? And if yes for what purpose?

Same reason there is a Playlist icon more file type conquest :D Anyway subtitles can be dropped onto VLC manually (when there is a video playing) so yeah it makes sense to associate

[edit]
1.0 may not use the subtitle icon initially until it put's subtitle extensions in it's association list.

A playlist is a playlist and VLC can do playlists, but VLC doesn't do subtitles. I mean, I associate subtitles with VLC I double click and...nothingness.

PS:@lopoz The icons are very very beautiful, although very macish.

true , your point is to leave out having an icon for subtitle files? Agaian I was tagging along with what other media player's can do in their associations. Personally I like the inclusion of a subtitle icon.

btw I never mentioned subtitle inclusion first:
Well, I don't think we should have 40+ icons.

Let's start with 4 (audio, video, subtitle, generic) and see what happens.

I think gebeleizis has a point.

But, that doesn't mean we don't want this icon, since we could use it for something else than association.
Generally, those icons are nice, but maybe they are not wide enough.

Hmmm, this is the exact format that Mac OS X uses. Are the icons on Windows wider?
Just when I though everything was worked out

@j-b: where do you stand on the colored versions of the icons? Are we going for the gray stripe, or the colored ones?
@gebeleizis: Yea, they were actually made on a Mac for the Mac, so I guess they have a Mac 'feel' to them

Hmm now we stand before a decision. I agree the Mac icons look gorgeous now. Should there be a different icon set for Windows, more along the standard windows document icons, but still with the same basic content (stripe/symbols)? I could follow the Vista Guidelines http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa511280.aspx.
And should Audio/Video/Subtitle text now be included or removed? We could think of another symbol to resemble playlist files in that case.

I agree that decisions have to be taken by someone who will decide whether or not these icons will be used in VLC.
We can keep changing things on our own, but, in the end, a VLC dev will probably decide about the incorporation of the icons. So let he/she speak up about what they want..

IMO, my icons are done and can be used for VLC. Oh, and I accept the GPL. If someone (j-b?) disagrees, let me know what should be changed and I can do it.

[edit] About the subs icon (and association): IMO it should be kept, as usually a folder with a movie will contain a video file and a subtitle file. Having both filetypes associated with VLC just looks right as they'll both be used in that player.
Maybe opening a subtitle could launch VLC (already happens) and open the video with the same filename (doesn't happen yet). That would give purpose to the filetype association and therefore also to the icon.

I considered doing a separate set for Windows but I now find the idea not so useful. The width difference is not too much to default icons and anyway on Windows due to the lack of specific file type icon guidelines there is such a variety in width and style. Just look at the following screenshot, the vista_audio.ico would be a redo of the mac icons in windows style. Unnecessary imho.

Well, I guess I will be the one deciding for Windows icons.

We need 4 icons (video, audio, playlist, sub) + a raw one (the one we have now, and that will not change yet), respecting the Vista icons guidelines (I know aLtgLasS is able to do good ones). Be careful about aspect ratio of those icons.

For mac, I have no idea what we are going to do.
