Let's get VLC on the PS3

Postby systemshocker » 16 Oct 2006 03:40

The Sony Playstation 3 will be quite the system when it comes out. It is damn good for a computer system, with a processor around 20 gigahertz, and the single best Nvidia card that has come out. Sony is not denying that it is a computer, proudly saying it is a computer and you can plug in whatever sata hard drives and usb devices into it. And the Playstation 3 has Linux. So wouldn't that be great if we could get VLC player for the Playstation 3? We could actually watch .mkv videos off our sata hard drives in the PS3. And think about if we could use VideoLAN to capture blue-ray movies the PS3 is playing and saving it to the hard drive. When the Playstation 3 becomes more available next year, VideoLAN would be a great program to use on it. So how about trying to make it for the Playstation 3 eventually?

This could be a good idea. But we may lack material to test/develop it...

Please stop not so true hype.
20 gigahertz, NOT (3.2 GHz PPE+ 6xSPE ain't same).
single best Nvidia card, NOT (8800 is out, and Nvidia GPU on PS3 is crippled, about 7600 on PC world )

It would also need harware donations. And Europe lanuch is on March 2007, most VLC devs are from Europe. Also libraries would need rewrite to support SPE.

Plus the main processor "cell" is brand new ....... there is not older version ..... so first it needs :

1 - A compiler
2 - ressources
3 - a linux that works on it ......

better to go to buy a dvd player with divx and other codecs enabled for 40$ ..... ;)
or even build a media pc ...... it will be cheaper than a PS3 .... And it's already there.

Don't mix the power of a PC and the PS3 too .... the purposes aren't the same and so the design ..... PS3 will be never more "powerful" than a PC (and a PC will never be more powerfull than the PS3). The use is too different .....

for example ......

Let's say the example of graphic cards ...... a single 600 Mhz GPU is sufficient to lay down any actual processor in terms of 3d .... Why ? because it's optimised for it ..... the intel or amd processors are all purpose witch is not the case of a gpu processor ..... so the gpu will loss in any domain other than 3d .......

The same thing is true with PS3 witch is not a PC and never will (if it does, better buy a true one).
Sony claims that PS3 is a PC in order to lower the VAT over his product (in some country the VAT is lower for PC than console)

It has a PowerPC-based "Power Processing Element" (PPE) and six accessible 3.2 GHz Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs), plus it would be much more expensive to get a computer with the same specs as the playstation 3. Yeah, and it has Yellow Dog Linux on it, as mentioned above.

Power PC based is not equal to Power PC compatible....... The processor is the first in his familly.

where your linux says "support PS3 ......." ? nowhere.

Even the game developers have trouble to program under ps3 ......

and what do you expect with those specs with vlc ?

faster Video ?
framerate btw 150 to 170 ?
better image quality ?

because none of them will be noticed or true. It will be the same than a low cost computer or dvd platform.

plus if it's like the ps2 ..... you will damage more faster your drive ....... and

It says on the image of that link.
For the Sony PS3
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/news/ ... 0-17.shtml
more specs. It will be fully working Linux. But it won't be shipped with console (lisence and support issues), so people have to download and install it themselves.

Most people expect somewhat "cheap" HDTV box. Because it has USB support you can stick DVB USB dongles and record television and watch it quite easily.

hummmm so you talk about the premium version of the ps3 .......

but if you have an HDTV box .... you need also a HD TV ..... witch is not cheap ...........

For this feature someone need to buy a ps3 platform to the vlc team ;)

Any news on this front?

Is there an existing Linux PPC Build of VLC? Does it necessarily have to be for Yellow Dog Linux 5? Can any PPC Build(if one is available), be used?

You can try to compile VLC manually, http://developers.videolan.org/vlc/nix-compile.html
and report possible errors to devs.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to even compile this. I really hope someone who has a greater familiarity with Linux will do better. For now I'm stumped :(

I have gotten VLC to work on YDL for the PS3. Its not too difficult. Here is a link on the instructions:

http://forums.qj.net/f-ps3-linux-283/t- ... 81670.html

The bad news is that transport stream (.ts mpeg2) playback of both 720p and 1080i material is too choppy. This was material recorded from ABC (720p) and CBS (1080i) in the mpeg2 ts format. I played files locally (by way of external usb HD) and through the network (windows share). Both had the same result.

I launched the system monitor and observed something interesting. Two processors are listed, and during playback one topped out at 60% with the other at 90-100% during full screen playback. There realoly needs to be a PS3 opimized version of it where all of the processors are used.

Lower bitrate avi and mpg files played fine through vlc.

Here is some information on compiling programs specifically for the PS3: http://www.cellperformance.com/articles/

ANyone want to take a shot?

PS3 is a powerful device. But it will never match an ordinary PC. An open source OS with some free applications on a quite cheap machine will kick PS3’ ass now and forever.
Don't do drugs!
Peace!
