VLC 0.8.6 should read all .GXF ( smpte360) files

Postby T LEBAUSSE » 30 Oct 2006 23:06

VLC 0.85 was not able to play .gxf at all, now 0.86 can do it but not all the files !
I've played some .GXF files ( uploaded on your incoming FTP in july 2006)

Two files ( trailer.gxf and profile.gxf ) are ok
an other one in HD format 50Mbps was also OK

the other one ( testko.gxf) can't be read, nothing special on information but simply no sound no video.
this file is ok when using the new release of Mpayer ( not friendly on W32 !) and this file, of course, is ok with Thomson pro. video server

There is no more .gxf sample on your ftp location should i upload some new files ?

what could be wrong ?

Thank's for your help

what's wrong is that support is not yet complete :D
It's a work in progress

Happy to know that the process is on its way.

do you need some .gxf that vlc is currently not able to read ?

testKO.gxf reports an unusual start time which seems to confuse things, you'll see the VLC timecode/duration window have weird values then as well. See View, Messages for debug info:

Code: Select all

ffmpeg debug: - start time = 3600000000 ffmpeg debug: - duration = 1171040000
Profile.gxf and trailer.gxf have start time = 0 and do play correct.

It's clear, thank you for your answer and investigations you made.

all my .GXF have been created by a Grass Valley ( Thomson) Profile video server.
As used in professionnal broadcast company they all start with time code set to 01:00:00:00 according to the TC of the digital betacam video tape that was used at the ingest process.
Since they have around 15000 hours of video like this do you think it could be possible to get a release of VLC able to read them ?

Using the latest Mlayer I'm are able to read all those .GXF, maybe it's just some DLL to update but I'm not developer at all :-)

I've looked at this quite a lot, and there is something terribly broken. And it's not VLC. i think VLC is just more picky about the MPEG2 it's being fed.

I think the gxf demux of ffmpeg is not setting the dts correctly. Same goes for mxf btw. I'll try to get someone to investigate.
