Save Podcasts Quickly

Postby hartman5000 » 16 May 2012 02:29

I would like a "Save Raw Output As.." option in the Playlist Context Menu. So I can quickly save a few podcast files and transfer them to an mp3 player.

Current Save Process:
1. Right Click and Save... on a Podcast brings up the Convert window.
2. I always select and copy the podcast filename from the Source.
3. Click browse button, it goes to the vlc folder.
- I tried to have vlc remember the last save folder by checking "embed the file browser in open dialog" in the preferences.
4. Navigate to the save folder I want and paste in the filename.
- I Then copy the folder path from the Destination, so I can paste it in again when saving multiple files.
4. I always check "Dump raw input" because I don't want to convert an mp3 podcast.
5. Click Save

I think this process could be stream lined for when I download a remote file.

1. Right click and Save Raw Output As...
2. A File Save Dialog Opens with remote filename already filled out.
3. Navigate to folder click save.

I am using Windows 7 VLC version: 2.0.0

I just get the URL in the Convert window and then copy/paste it into my browser and save the file.

My question goes on from this, I've subscribed to a podcast - which will be referred to many times in future.
My purpose is personal, academic & journalistic.
a) I want to download all the episodes. At present that's between about 7&8 thousand individual episodes & increasing all the time.
b) I then want to do much the same thing with a dozen or more podcasts - saving each to its own folder (which for logistical reasons I'll probably archive into years).
Surely I don't have to do this episode by episode?

I've found article after article that promises to tell me how to save podcasts. Either they talk about individual programs or they are in fact instructions on how to subscribe.
I'm expecting some sensible & frankly intuitive way of dragging a subscription into my Media Library, or my music>podcasts>year>podcastname folders.
The subscriptions will vary from about 1Gb to around 200Gb. I have 20Tb of storage ready & waiting.
How do I do that please?

I've done it before when too lazy to go to a patreon page of a podcast I'm a member with. First you got to add the RSS feed that you get from the podcast, if on Patreon that's easy to obtain, but a lot of the entirely free podcasts that are hosted on some podcast platforms are easily added to VLC in the Podcasts section with the view with all the options on the left that has Playlist, Media Library, then the My Computer folders (My Videos, My Photos, Music), Devices : Discs, Local Network : mDNS Network Discovery, Network Streams (SAP), Universal Plug & Play), then it will say Internet and have Podcasts, you put your cursor near the border of the frame and a big + sign will show up click on it and you'll be able to enter RSS addresses for all the podcasts that support RSS feeds (almost all of them). Then you click right click on an episode. A box will pop up, don't touch the Source, click on Dump Raw Output, select the folder you want the podcast to save to, name it in the dialog box, make it an .mp3, I know there is smaller just as good file sizes, but in the case of Patreon RSS feeds, they are mp3 files when you download them on the site, so they are encoded as mp3, sure you could convert and all, but it seems you don't want to do that. when you click start, something will appear in your playlist, you click play and the podcast will start to look as if it was loading with the orange line going back and forth but after not very long it will stop and when it does, go take a look at the directory, your saved podcast will be there. That's how I've done it when I didn't feel like logging into patreon and doing it manually or use software such as jdownloader which is a pain when it needs to download from any paid for platforms, setting the login and password rarely worked for me, with podcasts anyway, I've done it with video files and even youtube streams as they were happening, watching the stream in VLC and it would save along, but that's not what you asked for. Hope this helps even if you made this post before a world changing event took place, at least world disturbing enough to be a huge pain to those who were never affected heh.

Or maybe this will help someone else.

p.s. While I'm at it, can someone explain to me wtf is a mDNS Network Discovery. I know how to set up "exotic" DNS protocols for browsers or system-wide like DNS-Over-Quic, but I never heard of mDNS Networks.
