Deciding what to do when I open a compatible file

Postby AP2023 » 18 Feb 2024 17:02

I have a habit of using VLC for both video and music.

A few too many times it has happened to me that I was watching a video and I had to pause it to watch another one, so I paused and clicked on the other one, forgetting that the setting was to replace the video playing with the new one.
I know that in the settings meanderings I can indicate to always open a new instance, but that's not what I always want.

If I have an instance open with a paused video I want a new one opened. Unless I use a file context menu to put it in the queue.
If I have opened an instance of a finished video and I open a new video I want to be asked in which of the open instances to load the new one, whether replacing it or queuing it or in a new window.
If I am playing an audio track or audio playlist I want the new audio file to end up in the queue, if it is paused I want to be asked whether to queue it or open a new window.
If I have windows open with videos and I launch an audio I want it to always go to a new window. And vice versa.

Not all of my videos should be understood as movies: video clips I usually want to go in the music queue, so if I launch a video file shorter than 5 minutes I want to be asked whether to consider it as music or video and whether to remember the choice for the next few minutes. If I decide to treat it as music I want it to end up in the queue of the other audio tracks but obviously showing the video as well.
And it is also possible that an hour-long audio file should be treated as a movie.

I would also like a more convenient way to show or not show the tracklist while playing the movies.
