iOS/iPadOS: start playing network file immediately when invoked from the Files app.

Postby vvvvlllllccccc » 19 Aug 2022 14:31

If I connect to a network share in the Files app, click a video file, and then choose "Open in VLC", it seems that VLC is copying the whole file from the SMB server to a local temp directory before start playing the file. For a small video file, it could take several seconds, but for a big file, it takes forever. Worst, there is no UI indication of the copying process, so VLC just shows the network tab until the copying completes.

I have downloaded many video players from the App Store and tested them for doing the same thing. Some players tried to copy the video file to the local temp directory first (e.g., PlayerXtreme, Fileplay), but at least they showed the progress, unlike VLC. Some players (e.g., OPlayerHD Lite, Amaze Player, Outplayer) were able to start playing the video file immediately. Since they can do it, it must be able to directly play the network-shared file passed by the Files app, without copying the whole file first.

Please make VLC work like OPlayerHD Lite, Amaze Player, or Outplayer, so that when the user clicks "Open in VLC" for a video file on a network share in the Files app, VLC can play the video file immediately. To be honest, the current behaviour: copying the whole file without any progress indication, seems more like a bug.
