Why doesn't a similar strategy work for this reverse frame problem?

Because VLC is not precise enough for seeking like that. This will come, but requires MAJOR architecture changes in VLC. I would expect this to come in 4.0 or 5.0.
So it's been 2 years since this post, and I see that vlc is still version 3. When is version 4 likely to come out? Is a 5 year wait time reasonable?

2 years later, computers still lack infinite memory and processing power.

So almost 3 years later and we still don't have this feature. I guess the developers don't care.

Almost 3 years later, and you still did not care to read the earlier answers explaining why it can't be done?
