Stream to Chromecast

Postby Allrounder » 03 Sep 2017 15:18

I hope it's the right forum I'm posting in, since I'm using VLC 3.00 git version (downloaded today, so must be up to date) - I have seen some snappy (and useless) answers in the Windows related forum, so I hope for some better answers here.

I'm trying to cast to my Chromecast 2, connected to my TV. TV is on, set on the HDMI with the Chromecast, it's working (runs fine with other applications, like Chrome, Video Stream for Chromecast), both computer and Chromecast are on the same WLAN (via router), firewall (Kaspersky Total Security is set to "Local Network", set to "Private Network" in Network and Sharing Center... Windows and Kaspersky updated.

In VLC, I'm clicking Video > Renderer > Scan - and nothing else happens. Chromecast isn't shown anywhere, seems like VLC can't find it.

Tried clicking Media > Stream > choose a local file (.avi) - but get stalled when I have to choose Destination Setup. I'm no newbie or complete dumbass in computers, but I can't figure out, which settings I have to click, in order to stream to Chromecast. In New Destination menu, there's nothing resembling Chromecast, only HTTP, MS-WMSP (MMSH), RTSP, RTP / MPEG Transport System and so on...

Where is the problem? Do I have to connect the PC directly to the Chromecast via wireless? Doesn't it work via home network? Firewall settings? Or just not yet developed function?

I have seen https://www.howtogeek.com/269272/how-to ... hromecast/ - but as mentioned, my Chromecast doesn't show up in the Video menu. The other option to stream the complete screen via Chrome to Chromecast isn't really an option, quality is simply too bad, strains capacity of GPU, network and Chromecast (and other things).

Any good (and useful) ideas?

If the chromecast is not seen, then there is a discovery issue. ARe you on Windows 10?

Yes, Windows 10 - forgot to mention that... Computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad Helix 2, network via Netgear R7000 Nighthawk on 5 GHz. Just thought about if it could be because the Chromecast is on 2.4 GHz, but shouldn't be an issue, or? Chromecast has 94% signal strength to router. And in other applications, I never had problems with streaming. No lag, no buffering pauses.

Had figured out it could be a discovery issue, but where to start? Computer, OS, firewall, network settings or just the Chromecast 2 not compatible?

Do you have other adapters in the network panel?

What do you mean by network panel and what kind of adapters? If you mean how many devices are attached to the wireles network, there are max three computers, two network disks and a printer, cabled to the router, two phones and a repeater.

But how comes VLC can't discover the Chromecast, when Chrome, Youtube and Videostream for Chromecast on my computer can find it, as well as other computers and phones can? I can even see it on my network map (Netgear Genie, signal strength 97%) and there are no IP address conflicts.

If you mean other network adapters on the computer, there is mobile data adapter (4G/LTE) but its deactivated. But as I don't have problems with the Chromecast, other than VLC not finding it, it shouldn't be an issue.

Clearly an isolated VLC problem...

Sure, but maybe it sends the broadcasting packets on the wrong adapter. We used to have a problem with this.

The first step is to open the VLC Media Player on your PC. At that point, pick the file you want to watch.

Pause your video on the off chance that it begins playing naturally.

Now go back to your Chrome browser and tap on the casting tab. This uses your Chromecast so you can watch your VLC video.

Tap the drop-down bolt and select cast desktop.

Next, select your Chromecast gadget in the list.

You'll see a pop-up saying Chrome might want to share your screen. To permit it simply tap the share buttonin the lower right.

Next backpedal to your VLC media player and begin your picked video. Tap the play button and influence your video to full screen measure.

That is it. You're currently viewing your VLC media with your Google Chromecast device through the Chrome browser on your PC.

"Cast Desktop" doesn't really do the trick, have tried that before VLC 3 came out, quality too bad. Lacking, sound out of synch, colors distorted.

The idea of using the built-in renderer of VLC 3 i to play directly from VLC to Chromecast, not around several corners. I had it working for some days, but after a computer restart due to updates, I haven't been able to make the connection between VLC and Chromecast. Only option is 'Local' - Chromecast isn't available and the 'Scanning' is greyed out.

Works fine with Youtube on Chrome and Videostream for Chromecast.

After the restart (have done several since) both computer and Chromecast are on the 5 GHz network.

Do you have some disabled network interfaces in the control panel?

To be more specific: Is there a way to force VLC to scan for a Chromecast device? Or can I manually input the Chromecast's IP?

@ Jean-Baptiste: What do you mean with disabled network interfaces? In Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network Connections?
Iv'e got Bluetooth: Not connected
Ethernet: Deactivated
Mobile Phone: Not connected
Wifi: Connected to my 5 Ghz WLAN
So are you suggesting, I enable the ethernet connection, despite it's not connected?

Hello,
I have an issue of the same kind with VLC 3 for Mac OS. VLC show the CCast in Rendered menu but nothing happened when I play (loading blue bar and stop). My CCast works on Mac OS (El Captain) with Chrome. I have also a PC(W10) and the streaming with VLC perfectly works on the same networks and CCast.
So i conclude the bug is due to Mac OS parameter or VLC for MacOS.
May be there is a setup configuration (local network or something) ?
Thanks

I’m using VLC version 3.1.1. When I attempt to stream an ISO movie to my TV via Chromecast, the Chromecast “home screen” disappears but then all I get is:
A black screen
Close to the bottom a dot with the word “LIVE” next to it
And below that the name of the movie with underscores at the spaces (Captain_America_Civil_War.iso)
Not sure where to even start.
Thanks for your help.
