Have loop autoplay on, and try to load some file type that does not make sense to load with VLC, like a text file. I believe I don't have to describe what happens, other than you might have to use system monitor to send sigkill to VLC.
That kind of thing also happens when a video file in external hard disk is shown in file browser and that hard disk is just pulled out and then trying to use that video file from a non-connected drive.
Saying "don't do it" is not a real solution.
VLC should be able to handle malformed files gracefully. Sometimes there is bitrot for physical reasons (like gamma ray hitting a memory cell ).
