Patches are welcome for the first 2.
Impossible, since this is user option.

Why impossible?

It just writes two files to user's %appdata%, I think you could redirect it to somewhere else...

In the business world these auto-update things are the first ones to be turned off, that's why I'm asking the feature.

It would mean to write into every user %appdata%/vlc folder, and that would be problematic.
The proper fix is to deactivate it differently, and is therefore more complex.

As usual, patches or sponsorship are welcome.

As I said, those two files could be relocated somewhere else?

Perhaps HKLM registry?

This way the autoupdate should check only the registry for let's say setting "AutoUpdate" is it 0 or 1, just like Java runtime does.

And this is not packaging, but code.

Yes, but should be implemented so that the installer package would be useful for businesses.

This is another discussion, to be honest...
And until some business actually care and sponsor the development, I doubt it will come...

Will the MSI package be a standard for future VLC releases?
Yes, if people test it.
I will be glad to test it.

Looking for a 2.0.5 msi. I saw 2.0.3 posted earlier in this forum, and that folder had 2.0.4 in there. no 2.0.5 though. I've tried to build an msi wrapper for VLC using WIX but I got lost.

Hey thanks for the link. Why is this one labeled intel? Just designating x86?

Will this ever be digitally signed?

Edit: Thanks for the MSI by the way.

a 64-bit 2.0.8 msi would be awesome right now. Though it would be more awesome if my users would just prefer linux in their classrooms.

Hi guys,

how far have you got with MSI packages? I found some at http://people.videolan.org/~etix/ but there is no documentation of that packages so I'm using Advanced Installer to repackage it to my own MSI where I changed some shortcuts properties (--no-qt-privacy-ask --no-qt-updates-notif). Is there any chance to provide MSI package with every release? I can also use the Wix project whitch can by converted in Advanced installer. I can provide finall package or Advanced Installer project if some want to use it for Enterprise distribution via SCCM...

Looks like the nightlies are now including an msi installer.

I've been banging my head against a wall, trying to get the msi to set the file associations for all file types by default. (Since I'm doing this as a silent install)

Also I had to edit out the condition to disable the install until the EULA box was checked (Since the installer is not honoring the standard property 'EULA_ACCEPT = YES')

EDIT:

I was able to get the file associations sorted.

Open the msi with an editor (I use orca) and go to the "feature" table, change the "Attributes" column to "24" for each set of associations you want by default.

Anyone knows when we can expect a public (stable) release of msi packages?
