Would automatic sequential playback be possible?

My apologies if there is either already a thread for this or this is already possible. I searched for evidence of either but found nothing.

Right now you can add files to your playlist and VLC will play them sequentially. It's basic and logical, which is all fine and good. However, may I offer the approach of another media player to suggest another approach? MPlayerX will, with no action from the user, use filenames to find related media (say, episodes 3-6 of a series or the next song in a folder with a music album) and automatically play them in sequential order when you open a file, while not adding unrelated files from the folder* (as a particular VLC extension and some other media players do). It's not perfect at finding the related files if the filenames differ too drastically (it's only code, after all), but tends to work so long as they are reasonably similar. Granted, that might not be everyone's preference, so having it be a toggle would seem like a sensible idea.

That is, if it's a possible addition at all. It's just that when I first saw this feature in action, I couldn't believe I'd ever been doing it any other way in the past. Everything else just seemed so suddenly primitive in comparison. It's a result that could, indeed, be achieved by manually creating a playlist, but surely some of us can agree that the automatic nature of this implementation is more elegant and convenient? So that's why I'd be rather ecstatic if it was available in as many media players as possible, VLC included.

*I'm not as sure about this with standard music naming schemes, because I only have two albums on my computer. I am entirely sure about it with video files, however.

This has been requested multiple times earlier. It is possible to implement this, but AFAIK nobody is working with this.
