[Mac] Three video window requests

Postby Gudtym » 17 May 2012 10:13

Hi,

VLC 2.0.1; OS X 10.7.3.

Three things relating to the video viewer window:

1) Half Size: This, in fact, reduces the size of the video to a quarter of its original size, not half. It's a semantic thing: the devs have chosen to make "half" relate to the vertical and horizontal dimensions, as opposed to the number of displayed pixels.
My request is that "Half Size" actually reduce the video to a half its original size by displayed pixels instead. Either that, or please rename the entry in the Video menu to "Quarter Size".

2) Altering the size of the video window by dragging a corner doesn't maintain the window's aspect ratio, resulting in almost every operation adding black bars to two sides. Holding "Shift" while dragging appears to improve matters, but it isn't perfect, and still adds black bars, albeit much smaller ones.
My request is that changing the size of the window manually using the mouse always maintain the aspect ratio of the window. Unless there's some good reason for the current behaviour I can't think of?

3) In many applications (1Password, TextEdit etc.) clicking on the filename in the toolbar provides a drop-down list showing the path to the current item in the Finder.
My request is that this function be added to VLC.

Thanks for all the hard work. :)

1. As far as I can tell Half Size currently works like other players (Quicktime, Mplayer), so why deviate from the norm.

2. Already fixed in the upcoming 2.0.2

3. That option already is sort of there. If you play video within the Main Window, then Command-Click the Icon / Filename in the titlebar. If you play video in a separate window than the playlist, the Icon / Filename is clickable on the Playlist window's titlebar.

I created a ticket to add the Command-click to the video window titlebar as well or instead of the separate playlist since that makes more sense.

1. The "Increase" and "Decrease" in QTX actually does work the way I suggest - for example, starting with a movie of native size 640 x 360, using "Increase" once produces a movie of dimensions 904x509, almost exactly twice the rendered pixels (actually a couple of hundred short, for which I'm sure there's a good reason). The current iteration of QuickTime Player doesn't seem to have a way of directing the size of the window to increase by "half"s and "double"s, only "Increase" and "Decrease", so I'm assuming you're referring to QT7. I don't have Mplayer so can't comment. By the way, QTX's "Increase" and "Decrease" is actually preferable to VLC's current method - perhaps you could replicate that in VLC instead of "half" and "double"?

2. Yay! :)

3. Hmm, I'm not getting this to work, but then I don't get an icon in my title bars, only the filename, so perhaps I've fiddled with the Preferences to break it (though I've checked and I can't see which option would have done that). I've tried this on both 10.6.8 and 10.7.3, on the playlist title bar and the viewer title bar, and I've tried right-clicking (which is the standard user action in Finder, QuickTime, TextEdit etc.), Command-click and Command-Right click - no drop-down menu appears.
Request: please match the current behaviour in existing native apps by assigning right-click to bring down this drop-down menu, and not Command-click as you've proposed.

Thanks for your feedback.

1) is a core feature for all the platforms, which can't be changed easily. This would be something for the next major release.

3) As Kevin said, there's a ticket on it now, which I'll close prior to 2.0.2. However, note that the requested icon and its drop-down menu is and will only be available in the bright interface style. It isn't supported by the dark UI style and won't be for 2.0.2 at least (since the black UI style uses a non-standard window, so I'll have to reverse-engineer the code for this widget).
