shutdown computer after play list complete.

Postby majinsoftware » 28 Aug 2008 15:35

Hey I would like this feature because I always watch a movie before going to bed and some time fall asleep. It would be nice if VLC could shut the computer down when all the playlist files are completed.

Thanks.

that actually would be nice and for this feature and some other ones are the reasons why plug in support should be added like a kinda winamp/ windows media player plug in system

I miss this feature too. Thats the reason y i cant use the new 0.9.x versions of vlc.
The older 0.8.x worked fine with a little tool calles "vlc shutdown" which looked if vlc has stopped playback and then displayed a checkox with a 20 sec timer (after this 20 sec an no user interaction the pc shut down).

I'd really glad if anyone could write a new tool or - much better - would integrate this function in vlc. Like in WMP Classic.

Don't misunderstand me, i really like vlc and the developers do a really good job but this would be the point on the i :)

PS: pls ignore my bad english, its not very good, i know

€: just saw this feature request in a trac-ticket http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/1799 BUT i dont understand the meanings of the comments. is it dead or is there still a chance to see it in future versions? and if yes, how big is this chance?

If someone wants to make something like that, then it will be done. AFAIK nobody is working on that.

Hmm. Me hasn't looked for this function in the very latest version of VLC (0.9.3 or .4) but when me was testing version 0.9.0 there was an option for it in the Preferences. In the latest version, try looking for it under Preferences -> Playlist and see if there's a checkbox for 'Quit VLC after...'.

i looked after it, but there are only this options:
Image

"play end exit" will do it for the moment, afaik there are programs which shutdown the pc if a prozess has been killed. i have to look for it.

but if it would be possible, i'd like to have a option "play and shutdown". this would be much more comfortable :)

In Windows this can be easily done, but I am worried about security things.

The first comment only pointed out the security problem of such an option. In fact that's possible to use some option from the playlist, so you can have a playtlist that shutdown your computer. Imagine that you let this playlist on a website ... all people will see theire computer shuted down.
For the second comments: not an option but something only accessible from the interface to ask for the suhtdown

Hello,

I'd like to bring the discussion about this feature back to life. I don't understand how there could be a security issue.
In "Media Player Classic" the feature already exists.

You open the context menu on the screen. search for the entry "After Playback". Then you have several options:
-Close
-Stand by
-Hibernate
-Shutdown
-Log Off
-Do Nothing

The standard is "Do Nothing". Then everybody could choose from case to case basis what he wants to do.
Is there a possibility integrate such a feature?

Thanks for considering.

The lack of this feature is the only reason why I don't use VLC.
There is absolutely no reason to have such feature implemented in the playlist.
It should be a GUI option, just like other players have.

Please implement this feature, it would be so useful... and good for the environment too! lol

Think of all the people who wouldn't accidentally leave their computer on all night when they fall asleep.

So do I. I prefer to install 35928462934 codecs instead of having my PC turned all night on.

I've made a script that could help on this situation. Simply play the file you want and after execute the script.

NOTE: Don't execute the script before playing the movie/music, unless you want to shutdown your pc :P

You can grab the file here:

I agree that this feature would increase the usability of the player. I don't agree this is a security risk; if a user is allowed to shut down a machine, then any of the programs he runs is also allowed. The security risk would be VLC allowing any user to shut down the machine, regardless his own permissions (for example, using a service running in privileged mode). For usability, this option should be disabled by default, and disabled-always when running as a browser module.

I have seen that this issue exists in the tracker, issue 2565. However, nobody has taken care of it since it was introduced 2 years ago :( . Are there any news on this?

Sorry to insist in this old topic...

I have seen that a shutdown mechanism is still missing from VLC. It has been requested multiple times, both here in the forum (this post and others) and in the tracker. The tracker issue 2565 was closed 9 months ago, but the functionality is not implemented, since the solution suggested (using the command line flag --play-and-exit) does not shutdown the computer. A similar tracker issue was 2237, but somehow it was restricted to the Mac platform. Finally, the wiki suggests the use of a script file (.bat/.sh) to load VLC and shutdown later; however, that case does not seem very appropriate, since it does not allow to close VLC (before a movie ends, for example) without shutting down the system.

Someone has discussed about security problems regarding a system shutdown. I really see no problem at all, since the program is executed with the privileges of the user currently logged on. If the user is allowed to switch off the computer -- then there is no problem in allowing one of its programs to do it. If the user cannot shut down the computer -- then the OS would prevent VLC from shutting the machine down.

Since many people asked for it... could this please be implemented?

Thanks in advance!

There is a way to shutdown the computer in windows using the command prompt. Here are the steps:

1) Open command prompt
2) enter the following:

"shutdown /s /t 7200"

The 7200 is for 7200 seconds or two hours, and this can be adjusted to shutdown the computer at a sooner or later time
