Option to directly delete file from harddrive

Postby SchwarzerRiese » 22 Oct 2010 21:42

Hi there!

I think it would be nice to have an option to delete a file right from the player.
At the moment it's too complicated to do this I think.

You to open the explorer, open the file-path and then delete it. (After you've already selected 'Next File' in VLC, Otherwise windows will fail of course)
One of the problem I always have is, that even that option "show containing folder" doesn't work very well.
In most cases it simply doesn't react to a click.

So a solution would be, to give the user an option to delete a file right from the player.

For example there could be an option in the context menu when clicking a file in the playlist. Something like "!Delete permanently from HD!".
To prevent people from doing this unintentional there should be at least 2 "safety barriers".
First one should be to mark that option in the context menu Red
Second one could be an automatic 2nd confirmation-box which asks if you really want to delete the file.

In the Preferences of VLC there must be an option to turn this function off completely! And if you activate that whole function there should be a big warning message what this option is for.
But also there should be an option in the "pro-users" menu to disable the 2nd "do you really want"-question. (important)

Of course the whole option would be disabled in a fresh install of VLC.
So I don't think that any user would be able to blame VideoLAN for a file that was deleted.

I think this would be a fair compromise between security and ease-of-use, what do you think?

I like VLC really, and it's a great program, but this function really lacks in my opinion.

I have I big music archive digitalised from my CDs or bought from stores in the Internet. But sometimes there are tracks I really don't like. But always opening the explorer isn't the best solution in my eyes.

Would be very cool to hear some other opinions on that!

Thank you,
SchwarzerRiese

Hi,

this feature was asked for multiple times. I'll add links to the threads I'm aware of:

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=71019 (Jan 2010)
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=52830 (Nov 2008)
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=33804& (Mar 2007)
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=52830 (Jul 2006)

I also think it would be pretty useful. Would it be possible to implement such functionality as a VLC plugin/module? If it theoretically possible I'm could use my next holidays to hack such a plugin but I want to avoid digging in the details of vlc programming if it is doomed to failure ;-)

I'll post a reference to this thread in the old threads so maybe the original authors can follow this one (so we don't have too many threads dealing with the delete feature request)

Hello j-b, kaig and elena!

Thank you for your replies!

@j-b:
Nice to hear that you like the idea and/or the way to realize it.
...what do you think? Is there a chance to see a feature like this in VLC sooner ot later?

@kaig:
Ok, cool, thanks for showing me these threads and for placing the link this thread here.
(FYI: Thread 2 (2008) and Thread 4 (2006) are the same)
It's nice to see that other people would like this feature also. As always there are some security concerns, but I think these could be solved. E.g. with the way described above, or others if there are suggestions.

@Elena:
I don't think the willingness to pay for such a solution would help here, ...but thanks for your interest anyway!

Let's see what the developers can do for us in Future...

Best Regards, SchwarzerRiese

I will chime in again. I hunted this question down again today, because I'm too am using VLC for post-filming editing stuff. Sifting through clips...

We have a workflow where we split footage into 10 second clips, then go through and keep the good 10 sec clips, and delete the rest.

Would be very nice to have this ability in vlc. :-)

thx/chad

I also agree that it would be a fantastic feature! I would like to donate for implementing it too.
Maybe there is easy way to develop a file delete plug-in?

It would be mentioned in NEWS because it would be a feature that could destroy existing files.

So what is it going to take to get this done? Do i have to start an online Petition? and get 1000's of Signatures?

Hi,

this feature was asked for multiple times. I'll add links to the threads I'm aware of:

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=71019 (Jan 2010)
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=52830 (Nov 2008)
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=33804& (Mar 2007)
Hi.

did request something like this too. Here : viewtopic.php?f=7&t=23063

btw, if you define some "strange" Shortcut / Global Hotkey it is cancelling the risk of "Oops problem" ^^
For example in Winamp's Playlist File Remover I defined [Ctrl+F12] as a Global Hotkey for this feature...
It is quite hard to accidently press thoses key together =)

The risk is for Very big files, as the Windows Trash (at least on XP) has a hard limit of max ~ 4go. If your trash is filled with 2,5 Go files, every file bigger than 1,5 go will be directly deleted.
To avoid this issue you could set a specific folder, as in Winamp's plugin.

cheers

I don't know how people usually value their time, but if you really need this, you can also hire a coder for this feature.
