mkv cover art

Postby potatis » 30 Aug 2011 02:19

Not sure if this has been requested, but could there be support for mkv's embedded cover art
to be displayed in the media info window? Probably isn't used much, but it might take off if
more programs/devices implement it: http://matroska.org/technical/cover_art/index.html

Well, VLC reads the cover art from the mkv, but doesn't display it (yet)

Any chance to have this feature any time soon? This is an indispensible convenience for a functional (MKV) video library and currently it's only possible in Gnome/Nautilus which is the sole reason of my imprisonement in Gnome.

HEYYY! It works. If you install from the daily ppa (haven't tried the stable), VLC loads the embedded MKV cover arts in its library view. Just double click on the movie. Video starts to play and when you look back you see that it's thumbnailed. THANK YOU.

You're a great guy Jean-Baptiste. Thank you. VLC was my favourite app in Mac and so it is in Linux as well. And you're the best developer in the whole planet!

I believe it will improve, but for the time being it's better to put MKVs inside folders with the covers. Otherwise thumbnails disappear when VLC is relaunched.

For anyone who would like to have an iTunes-like view of his/her MKV files, that is, with embedded DVD/BD covers:

In Linux there's only one app capable of ripping/converting your DVDs/BDs or DVD folders losslessly to MKV: MakeMKV. You can easily determine what part to include or omit (subtitles, audio, extra features, chapters). It takes around 15 minutes to rip a DVD. It's not open source, but free. Follow the (for buntus) easy instructions here: http://www.makemkv.com/download/.

Then you need to install MKVtoolnix to embed the covers: http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoo ... loads.html. Look here as well for cover art guidelines: http://matroska.org/technical/cover_art/index.html.

If you need extracting anything you can use this: http://qt-apps.org/content/show.php/QMK ... ent=145071

Jean, I know it's been asked before and this is not the right place, but really in order for VLC to become the one stop solution for both video and audio there's only one thing left, the gapless audio (FLAC) playback. Well, maybe another one (!) is this: VLC can't add a directory of 12000 FLACs into its library --struggles and quits after some time.

If not for these, one wouldn't need any other (non-satisfactory) separate audio player.
