Let video automatically play in external monitor/projector

Postby beatpower » 18 Apr 2011 13:40

Let video automatically play in external monitor/projector.

At this moment, you can move the videoscreen into the screen of the external monitor when you extend your desktop in Windows conforguration screen.
Unfortunately, when a new video is started, the screen pulls back into his original position, and that is at your premier monitor, or the screen where you have opened the file.
This behaviour differs per video extension.
For publical purposes it would be great to have the tracklist at screen one, and the video playing at screen 2 (could be a projector, etc.) And this setting should be forced/saved.
Maybe also one extra preview-screen at screen one besides the tracklist could be practical.

At this moment, neither one of the available settings worked out, so a new feature in VLC which supports this would be great.

You can already select the display. Either with --video-x option or using display device select option provided by certain VOUTs.

@VLC_Help Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I have no idea where I can find one of those options.
Maybe @ "extra" > "effects and filters" ?
Can I select the preferred outputscreen over there?

I have found the option for selecting which display to use, but unfortunately it seems (at least for me running two monitors off Windows XP) that when the media changes to the next item in a playlist, the fullscreened video will always jump back to the display on which that particular instance of VLC was first launched.

I may have overlooked a simple setting but I tried this for a good hour before I got it working the way I wanted (as detailed in the following post)

I have the same problem. The only thing I was able to do is to use clone display mode but could not find a solution for multiple displays.

@VLC_help, you are right that the display device is selectable when direct-x (direct draw) output is activated. The video's starts to play in the preferred screen in full screen if preferred. Unfortunately, when a second video comes up with another resolution than the first one, the VLC player starts to rescale but uses the resolution of the premiere screen to do that and not the resolution of the second screen. That means: the video will be displayed with the resolution of the premier display (desktop). When VLC player is closed and restarted, the video plays in the correct resolution of the second screen, untill another video comes up with a different resolution.
This could be a kind of a "bug" in the automatic-scale option. Could someone of VLC think about this issue?

VOUT rework should in theory fix resolution issues. (so VLC 1.2.0 might be a bit better)

I am looking forward to it.
It would be a great solution to display music videos on an external projector/monitors during events.
Manage the playlist and video controls on monitor 1 and display the video on monitor2/projector without any onther thing on the projection screen. This will give a professional impression.

I am using version 1.18 Macintosh and things work as you would want. All video is displayed on the second monitor.

It is five years later (Aug. 2016) and this still doesn't seem possible on Linux...
