Auto-detect TXT files option request.

Postby izajasz » 31 Jan 2011 11:56

WElcome.
First of all VLC i s the best player u can download , that is out of question. Yet i waas really unhappy about the removal of the option for auto detecting TXT subittles. I read some topics about this and the argumenta wast that txt are not only subitles but can be other things. In my country most of subs are in TXT so this option was perfect for me . This change made watching tv series and movies really harder. Anyway i dont put any other TXT files in movie folders besides subtitles thats why this change is unaccepteable. My proposition is - if u want so much for VLC to not open TXT files by auto (1.1.6 didnt open them for me at all - even manually) why not to make an option which would be turned off by default - "Enable auto-detect TXT files" and maybe adding some description to it why u suggest not to enable since the VLC player is the best player in the world and well, this feature was really makeing watching things easier and on the other hand i dont want to stay with outdated version of VLC ( i downgraded now sinvce 1.1.6 didnt even open TXT subs manually). Thank You for Your attention and i hope You will add the option.

You could use proper file extension for your subtitles. If your favorite subtitle site is sharing subtitles with .txt file extension, you could suggest them to use better file extensions.

Poland. We have the most popular website with the subtitles - http://napisy24.pl/ and there are only TXT-s. There are also a small program to download subtitles- http://www.napiprojekt.pl/ . Also-only TXT-s.
Why are you removing functions, which were very fine? I, for example cannot upgrade VLC to 1.1.6/1.1.7, because it's a very important and easy. And i'm looking for a replacement for VLC, but there are only worse players. So please-add an option! Which can be disable in a default configuration...

Because it was broken on many files...
The option to open .txt file is back in 1.1.7.

To have back the auto-detect .txt, we need a new option.

So, if it's back and it if possibly to make a new option in a prereferences - which can be disable in a default configuration... then please, just do it! In Poland there are only txt-s and i really don't think that will be change soon.

Really, i want to use this program, but right now i can't. The old versions have a security issues and the newest - non auto-detect.

Can you fix it?

Yes, I have a correct, and better fix, in the pipe for this issue.

In my opinion it's quite unfortunate to remove functionalities rather making them optional through preference setup. Cutting off .txt subtitles autoload was a mistake (IMHO) and VLC developers should realize that in many situations changing the extension is not an option. For example - movie file and subtitle file are on read only medium like CD.

I've checked VLC 1.1.7 and it's impossible to load .txt file as a subtitle file unless you change its extension. It won't open if you manually open it through menu (Video -> Subtitles Track -> Open File...) or drag-and-drop onto VLC window (that worked in VLC since I remember). Of course it won't autoload too, but that's something we already know. So far the only option is to change the extension or - if subtitle file is on read-only medium - copy it and then change the extension. Too much of a hassle, I think.

The best solution would be to make and option to set up for a user a set of allowed extensions which would be treated as subtitle files. It would default to any subtitle file format which 1.1.7 opens right now but any user could add .txt or in fact any other file extension to be recon as a subtitle file. The rest is up to VLC - all files with those extensions would be legitimately treated as potential subtitle files.

I guess this solution would please both anti-txt and pro-txt subtitle fans.

Ok, FLAME. Too bad for you...

1) Learn to search the forum.
2) Learn to search the forum.
3) the functionality was notoriously BROKEN, because it loaded ANY .txt, and errored. As 99% of .txt files are not subtitles, this was broken. (If you had searched just a bit, you would have known.)
4) It is still possible, to load a .txt file, as of 1.1.7, using advanced open or the subtitle menu.
5) Your solution is broken in so many ways, that it isn't even funny.
6) a correct solution was already fixed in 1.1.8. (If you had searched just a bit, you would have known.)
7) Learn to search the forum.
8 ) Your account is now on warnings.
9) VLC is volunteer work, we are waiting for your help.
