It's camera-dependent, depends on what/how it is streaming. Some vendors use, for instance, not-quite-vanilla MJPEG (if there is such a thing as truly vanilla MJPEG).

IP cameras

I am also very interested in information on using vpc to view streamed video from ip cameras. I recently bought a linksys wvc54g thinking naively that as it is streamed mpeg 4 video I could view the stream without problems on a Macintosh. Well of course I can't; you need windows media player 10 because it's not vanilla mpeg4. I can view short video clips sent by the camera as email video alerts in .asf format using vlc but so far no luck with viewing the stream. Any advice?- I only started using VLC today is it may be operator error!

Bash linksys hard that they shouldn't build windows only products :)

Afraid you may be stuck. I recently bought several Axis and a DLINK camera. The Axis were fine but the dlink, like your Linksys, wasn't really fully standard -- DLink would have required an NDA and/or my purchase of a special SDK.

As a consumer, all I do is remove DLink from my allowed vendor list, for new systems.

I have an AXIS CAMERA 2130 PTZ for Network. I would save a stream format (mjpeg). The stream doesn't start, i 've controlled messages and they tell:

main error: no suitable decoder module for fource `mjpg'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

Does Vlc support this video format?
???I need install some libraries or the ./configure is a particular configure??

What is the string at command line?
vlc -vvv http://address_site.file.mpeg

I would capture from camera mjpeg images and save as file.avi
What do???

Thanks much
MPMJPEG?? what is??
