Gapless video playback

Postby rudjer » 27 Dec 2010 23:29

Hi all,

I searched forum and found couple of topics that mention gapless playback. As far as I can see it is still not possible to play multiple video files without the gap in between segments? (Most of the topics are old, I don't know if the feature is present in new versions of player?)
This feature would come in handy when playing content such as HTTP live streaming (the one that is intended for Mac OS, iOS, etc.). Here you have list of separate TS segments which should be played subsequently without the gap.
Since DVD files are also in some case TS containers and DVD playback is done without gap in VLC, can this be somehow implemented for any playlist that consists files with same video characterisitics (only bitrate may vary between segments)?
Any ideas on this subject?

Thank you!

Hi j-b,

thanks for the quick response!
I downloaded and tried vlc-1.2.0-git-20101228-0003-win32.exe , but I can't open any file - I keep getting message
"filesystem error: cannot open file (null) (One or more parameters are invalid)
main error: open of `' failed".
I'm using Windows 7 32 bit. When I go back to last official release, everything is OK.
I'll try with Linux also.
Anyway, I believe that the option is available in the new version (is it only for HTTP Live Streaming (TS files) - or it can be applied to any list of segments?).

So, the only way to get this to work in previous versions is to tweak source code? Can you suggest any other "lighter" approach with Lua scripting, or "fooling" VLC into thinking that the playlist is actually DVD?

Thank you!
Best regards

P.S. When is VLC 1.2 going to official release mode?

Thanks. I understand.
Any suggestions on how to make playlist "gapless" (maybe similar to DVD?) before I dig into source code? :)

IIRC someone tried and failed already on that. It is impossible to provide fully working gapless playback for VLC.

It is possible to do format specific gapless playback (e.g. play MP3 files without gaps), but that would require major changes to VLC core architecture.
