VLC and DCP (Digital Cinema Package)

Postby chlowden » 02 Jun 2010 19:55

Hello
I have just finished creating an open source DCP (Digital Cinema Package) and I have found that there is no open source player to view the files. As a DCP is not dissimilar in logic to a DVD, I thought that VLC might be able to read these files.
If anyone is interested you can find information concerning DCPs at the following sites

Many thanks

Hi chlowden!

Oh that sounds great!! It seems that Digital Cinema Packages becoming more and more a medium for indipendent filmmakers ;-) Hope to see more DCP's on festivals around the world to offer an alternative to 35mm reels...

We tried years before to use a customized VLC player version to playout 1080p footage at festival cinemas. Unfortunatly the VLC video out was full of jitter, tearing and micro dropouts also VLC doesn't support SMPTE timecode with frames... at this time nobody here was interested in high quality playback on large TV's or projectors nor the community was sensitive to 50Hz/60Hz or jitter problems.

So I have my doubts that there will be much progress... Media Player Classic Home Cinema Edition has an awful interface but is more oriented towards high quality playback with refresh rate controls, anti tearing options and good DXVA support...

VLC 1.1.1 has DxVA support too.
SMPTE timecodes are easy to do.

Hi Jean!

VLC DxVA support and the upcomming BluRay support are great things! VLC is without question the swiss army knife for playing video files on the desktop...

But I would be interested to hear if the dev. team sees VLC as a tool for home cinema playback or more as the flexible desktop tool that can playback all types of video and audio files on my desktop and receive streaming media?

--> SMPTE timecodes: As far as I know the seeking commands and timecode display functions only support seconds and no frames??

If VLC could display SMPTE timecode and could seek to a given SMPTE TC it would be over night a tool of interest for professional video review!

Jean, how could this be achived? I'm not a coder and havn't C/C++ coders available on a regular basis :-( Is there any way to get hands on this by the Skins interface?

best Regards

Can anyone tell me how VLC is working pls......
TCP or UDP socket is giving system call and then what is happening. How I can find it....

And another most important question for me is VLC is reading bunch of packet and decode and display or it is just getting one by one

If it gets bunch of data how much data it gets and this is just my thoughts based on the people talk but I couldnt find any explicit information in anywhere.
Please someone explain or just give me the link or something i will read

Regards

do you think that I ddnt look at there...it is not explaining good btw...If someone wants to comtribute something that person really should be crazy about vlc.....just small draws and just the beginning and end invokes ....
fdor the clent ; receive data from udp like this and buffering and decoding and sendin it to the graphic card......and differantiation between packet picture frame.....
if you know then do this otherwise dont give me the link which is very first link when i search vlc documentation!!!!!

Is this DCP-plugin open-source? Is it possible to obtain the source code. We are interested in developing this plugin further.

Greetings
Jan
