Multiple subtitle presets for quick switch of language

Postby windozer » 25 Jun 2010 14:23

It would be nice if users could create multiple subtitle presets, so that they can switch quickly between them - or even better that VLC automatically switches them according to the language code defined in a subtitle track.

I'm a language learner and sometimes I watch movies that have a different character encoding. All of these movies are MKV files that have more than one subtitle track, usually English and an Asian language. Although VLC automatically chooses to the English subtitle when putting "eng" in the "Preferred subtitles language" field, it cannot do the same for Asian languages. Because it doesn't switch to the font and character encoding needed for this language. And so all I see are squares unless I manually change the settings.

It is very annoying and tedious having to change the settings manually each time when I want to see a movie with another subtitle language. Therefore, it would be nice to have at least the option to create multiple subtitle presets that can be switched to easily with one click. Or even better: users should be able to bind them to letter codes so that VLC switches automatically to a preset according to the language letter code found in the MKV track.

So far, to avoid the hassle, I've used KMPlayer for playing Asian movies. KMPlayer recognizes any language encoding automatically and I've never seen any squareboxes there. But my main player is VLC and I'd like to use only one player instead of two. I guess there must be the possibility to implement such feature. If it works in KMPlayer, I'm sure it can be done for VLC, too.

Thank you for reading.
