FILE ASSOCIATIONS

Postby 3and20chars » 20 Oct 2009 04:24

This is not to swift removing the simple access from with in the program to change FILE ASSOCIATIONS.....

I have to pull the recommendation for VLC off my web site for the lack of this feature. I cannot recommend a program that will screw peoples chosen settings over.

About 85% or more of the people on my site are there because they need help to do things like install, uninstall, or fix, or modify the way something works.

VLC steals associations for those who don't see the little details in the set up. Then they panic, and it costs me time.

Sorry folks this USED to be a very good program, but not now... One Bad Apple, that's all it takes.

PLUS, the install fails more than not when upgrading from the last few versions for Windows 2000, XP, 2003, and IT WON'T DL THE UPDATE from within the program for any version of Windows.

Having to help so many people for your software being so buggy in the basics for the end users who lack the knowledge I have is just not in my schedule. And for me to have to jump through several programs in older versions of windows to get the associations back where I had them is just too much excess work. I have to recommend people who aren't willing to spend the time to fix the mess VLC creates, they should just stay away from it.

In windows Vista and 7, manually setting associations is not as bad as XP or 2000, or 2003, but still an excess of involved time.

As for myself, I will only run it a little longer on Vista and 7, to see if the repairs have been made. and if not, I guess it's good bye for good....

All programs that use various forms of media, must have a simple access to the file associations, I have choices as well as EVERYONE ELSE on what programs we prefer for what file format, if documents, audio, video, image, end even for downloading files, and many have choices for other 3rd party stuff because it's the first thing they learned how to do something in, like AOL users are stuck there until they been ripped off one too many times by AOL.

PS, the visualizations are just not up to par, everyone I know once they see MilkDrop in Winamp, that becomes their mp3 preference bar none.... :!:

How should this be then?
IT WON'T DL THE UPDATE from within the program for any version of Windows.
Known issue.

And there is a association setup dialog in Tools -> Preferences... and Interface called Association Setup.

VLC steals nothing. VLC at INSTALL time offer to register some association. If you can't understand that, we can't do anything for you.

In 1.0.3 I go to Tools>Preferences>Interface>AssociationSetup. Set Video associations. Apply.

The associations are not changed.

What's happening???
