APE & Other Oddy Knocky Open Source Codecs/Decodecs

Postby hoak » 12 Jan 2005 12:06

There are several mature and Open Source Codec/Decodec and loss-less audio compression projects like Monkey's Audio that would be nice to see integrated in VLC Media Player to move it even more to the 'All-In-One' solution.

I know this is likely a lot of work for someone to implement codecs and audio formats that are not the mainstream, but what are the prospects?

Monkey's Audio wasn't GPL compatible until recently. Actually, i have doubts if it is now, but everyone seems to just assume so.

If the format is well designed (good container/codec seperation) it should be relatively easy to support. But there has to be a developer interested in doing the work, and most current vlc developers are pretty busy.

Based on their Dev Forum:
http://www.monkeysaudio.com/cgi-bin/YaB ... 2;start=15

Doesn't sound like it's either GPL or LGPL, and there's clearly no claim that it's tightly coupled/integrated (a la QT on Mac or WMV or Windows)

Indeed. reading this i have to agree APE is definetly not compatible due to licensing issues.
