4% Slower Playback Please?

Postby UnoriginalGuy » 23 Dec 2008 15:44

Currently VLC supports either 100% or 94% playback. Would it be at all possible to get 96%?

I only ask because PAL runs 4% faster than NTSC so a 4% setting would equalize them. The reason why that is important to me is that me and a friend watch movies at the same time internationally and the playback on my end is constantly faster resulting in me having to pause constantly and we still winding up out of sync.

Thanks for your time. :-)

You cannot yet, provide an algorithm for the slider that can and I'll do it.

It should be possible to add a command line option to do that pretty easily. I'll add it this week if I remember.

Yes, this would be excellent. I am in the same category as the above poster, watching movies with a friend when I have a PAL copy and they have an NTSC copy, or vice versa. It might be easier to specify a frame playback rate, ie: 25 or 23.97, but either way works out well. This feature would make me very very happy, and I'd even upgrade my VLC before 1.0 is out for it, despite loving 0.8.x.

The 1.0 interface has now a slider that can do 0.96x instead of only 0.94x.

And thus there was continued worshipping of the VLC team.

I'll be here when it's out. Does it matter that it's actually 4.297%? Do we get to be picky in our feature requests?

Can you detail your question, I am sorry, I didn't get it.

The PAL and NTSC difference isn't absolute 4 %, but some decimals also. (PAL 25 and NTSC 23.976) but I don't understand the initial request on first place, because nobody sane does PAL <-> NTSC conversion by speeding up the playback.

Well, I need an explanation too :D
Sorry, because I don't get it, 1-23.97/25 is around 4.12.
Anyway, if you explain, I can try to get it...

If I am watching a PAL movie my playback is 4% faster than someone else's who is watching an NTSC movie. If I slow my movie by 4% then our movies run at similar speeds. Without the slower playback my movie runs almost 5 minutes ahead of theirs by the end of two hours.

The fact that it isn't exactly a 4% difference isn't important, it is close enough. Now the difference in speeds will be within one minute finishing time of each other instead of several minutes. So it is a great change and I look forward to the 1.0 releases.

2^(-1/17) = 0.960046687 is what we have now, with one key down in this slider.

Hello, I'm new here on this forum, but this is exactly what I've been searching for over the last week.
I just wanted to ask the following:
- Will this also pitch down the audio 4% ? Because this (the higher pitch in PAL dvds) is what causes the most annoyance for me when watching a PAL dvd.
- And what do I do to get the beta when it comes out? Just download VLC anew?
thanks.

Edit: and is it for Mac users too?

- The pitch correction is already present on VLC 0.9.x, but you have to activate scaletempo manually. It will be default on 1.0.
- The beta should arrive in a few weeks.

- Not for mac.

sorry if this is not the proper place to ask. But once there is a version 1.0 for mac, how do I adjust the playback speed? Becaude the only speed option I can find is CMND - / CMND + and it's pretty drastic. Seeing as someone pointed out there is already a 94% speed option available and I haven't been able to locate it.
