The old 'Quick Open' Option

Postby starclaws » 31 Oct 2008 09:59

The old 'Quick Open' Option that was in previous version would open a simple open file dialog box (I believe it was Windows style and is the same as the Windows notepad's file>open option with just a simple Open dialog) ... I miss this option ... It would always open back up to the previous folder and you could just select a new file from that folder you were in. (I hated the 'Advanced Open' option or something similar)

I also miss the little tiny picture quick buttons that were under the drop-down menus but I always hated the open button on that one(Advanced Open)... So I just used the drop-down quick open. I wish we could have those quick buttons again(Let me know if its just an option(Actually it SHOULD be an option) ... And I also wish that the open button on that one could be the 'quick open' from before.

One problem I have is a simple pause lag after a while(Kinda a memory leak type lag... Not sure and doesn't stream after a while... could be due to playing videos over a network wirelessly... It just eventually kills the player and you need to restart if you want it clear for a while again.)

Other than that... Best player ever created. Great support for most media content too. Its clear that the benefits outweigh the slight dislikes I have. Still dislike having the 'save' options and still requiring to restart VLC but I am sure that will be changed in due time. Just please keep the player simple and as close to MPC as possible... Quickest load times etc...

Thank you all.

Quick Open is there on 0.9.3 and 0.9.4.

Originally it would save what folder you last opened a file in and if you went to open a new file it would go back to that last folder instead of My Docs everytime... Its not quick if you have to go find the same folder again and again. Any word on if we can get those quick buttons as a 'Interface' Option?

I think this should be fixed in 0.9.5

Fixed? It was working before... Just revert back some code... and still no acknowledgment of quick buttons(toggled in options) as a suggested feature?

If you are referring back to VLC 0.8.6, it uses a completely different interface. Try a nightly build of VLC ("branch" for 0.9.x):

Yeah it used a 'little' bit of a different interface. But it was an older version. I would like for an option to toggle the little buttons.

And the 'fixed' part was the ability for the 'quick open' to have the previously opened folder that you used 'quick open' before to re-open that same folder you were just at. ... Is VLC going backwards in usability but forwards in codecs and other things... or something? ;p

Interface toggling options is all I ask ;p I shouldn't have to revert back to an older version to get what I would like nor to someone elses modified version ;p

The old interface was scrapped, for several reasons (search the forums). Use a nigthly build, or wait for a stable build. No one said you must go back to 0.8.6..

I use VLC to access media in many different locations on a network, often 4 to 8 directories deep. "Open folder" is useless for me because I need to read only a few media files among many in the same directory, and then back out of that directory to access an adjacent one. Version 0.96 that I'm trying now still has the same issue mentioned in this thread: every time I return to "Open File" I restart navigation from "My Documents".

I'm surprised more people haven't complained about it. Perhaps this very standard open file behavior is unnecessary for most? Strange.

Thanks for looking into this!

This is being worked on AFAIK. Use the "Advanced File Open" in the meantime if you require the directory/recent place to be remembered:
