correct subs with .mkv files

Sadly VLC cant read the subtitle information stored in a Matroska Video File (mkv) it rips them apart ignores coloring and placement. If you need some sample Pictures of the Problem mail me.

I completely agree, VLC is the number 1 media player for me but the ONLY disadvantage it has are the subtitles . I'd love to watch my anime subtitles in the styles and positions the fansubbers originally created them in. Currently I am forced to use Zoomplayer for this and there isn't a good alternative on Linux in my opinion so please developers do something _ab0ut da subs_ !

Yes, I just noticed when I tried. The subtitle style for MKV files have been improved a lot which is very great but it still needs some improvement as not all subtitles for every video are displayed in the correct color/style.

You are gonna have to provide us with explicit samples. As far as I know everything but complicated font layouting should work now for A.S.S/SSA.

I've tried taking snapshots but it's not working with VLC subtitles (PrtSc + built-in tool) and the files are too big for me to upload. Opacity doesn't seem to be supported yet, right?
And next to MKV subtitles, I also noticed that OGM subtitles are not being displayed correctly either.

Can you please also change that when you pause a video the subtitle pauses together with it? Because sometimes subtitles swap so fast that I need to pause the video in order to be able to read them but the current VLC doesn't allow that anymore. It does seems to work for some videos though.

PS: I also just noticed that the subtitles don't overlap each other anymore, which is a very nice update too !

I do not have this issue with 0.9.2 and 0.9.3. For me it would look like what you have in MPC.

I'm getting the same issue as you but only if the video is Xvid / DivX.

For instance, if the video is H264/VC1 then the SSA subs are working fine like in this sample:

However I get no SSA subs with this sample (and many other ones) which is XviD:

The last sample is also containing SUBT (arabic and japanese) subs which are working fine, only the SSA ones are not working.
That's on Windows XP Pro 32 bits.

Can you confirm this behaviour ? Not working with XviD videos but working fine with other video formats ?

TheDJ said it's working fine on his computer with any video format. So we have to find where is the difference. Maybe, as a developper, he has something installed on his system that we don't have on a default XP (DirectX SDK or another custom runtime ?).
Do the Vista users experience the same behaviour ?

For me it would be displayed too since most of my MKV subtitles work. Are you sure you enabled the right subtitles shadowsteel and if there are any other available don't they load either?

yes i picked the right subs (only one sub in the file anyway)
and as i said before some mkv load subs ok but most dont. i tried tweaking around but with no results.
maybe i use bad file or something like that.

Please, use MediaInfo for checking the content of your video files and post here which ones are working and which ones are not.

Examples:
XVID+MP3+SSA+MKV @ 1280*720p = no

At this Matrix Reloaded Trailer is no font attached. For some reason SSA and aegisub subtitle only works everytime (everytime i'm test it i mean ) if a font is attached into the mkv container. Don't ask me why. (Windows Vista - VLC 0.9.2). Nothing to do with the Video codec.

btw:
Looks like only one font is used. If a subtitle file 2 font's defines and even 2 fonts attached, only one font is displayed for both or i make something wrong.

And if at aegisub subtitle file a style is defined that is never used e.g:

(Default is never used) VLC does not display the subtitle even if "XFont" is attached into the mkv container.

I tried the subbed videos that weren't working for you and I'm pretty sure this is part of bad subbing, there were even a lot of bad translations..

Bad translations maybe. Bad subbing? Sometimes the subs even don't work if they used official aegisub app.

PS. i've downloaded the VLC source and maybe i take a look - only i have less spare time to do so.

This is interesting information. It means that there is something wrong with the configuration of fontconfig in the Windows binary. We already knew SOMETHING was wrong with fontconfig on Windows, we just weren't sure what the exact problem was.
