insyncherate (play audio and video from separate sources)

Postby ninapaley » 09 Sep 2008 23:33

I would like to play a DVD from one source, while playing audio (.aif, .wav, or .mp3) from another source at the same time. I call this insyncherating instead of synching because it is done on-the-fly by the user, not the media producers, an important legal distinction. A popular example of insyncherating is "Dark Side of the Rainbow": playing Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" with MGM's "The Wizard of Oz." Rather than using a separate player for the audio and video, I'd like to insyncherate them in one player.

If VLC can already play audio and video from separate sources at the same time, can someone please explain to me how to do that? I opened a DVD in the player (a VIDEO_TS file on my hard drive), and while that was open, opened an audio file (.aif, same hard drive), and predictably lost the video when the music loaded.

An insyncherating feature could have huge and excellent repercussions for independent filmmakers. Please help me, I'm new to videoLAN.

Thanks,

--Nina

You can try: "vlc <some input> --input-slave <some other input>" command line. VLC 0.9 has an option in the GUI to add a slave input. In 0.8.6 you can edit the MRL in the open dialog and append :input-slave=<some other input>.

I'm not a coder; I just use the VLC Player. Is there a way to insyncherate using the existing Player interface?

If not, can someone please develop such a way? A pull-down menu option?
