audio gapless playback and cue sheet support

Postby geaestay » 26 Nov 2007 00:12

I realy like this player, but i have to use foobar 2000 to playing music, because i use to backup my CD's in cue-flac format...
Gapless playback is very important too, for playings complete CD's

****Sorry for my bad english

Operating System: It's...blue screen
Location: Heaven? No no. What's that other place that starts with an "H"? Oh yes: Home. ^_^

I know, late reply. I too would find this to be a useful feature. I do quite a bit of audio encoding and deal a lot with cue sheets. If VLC could play these it would be really useful.

Well, I ran over this problem several times now and everytime I had to notice that I still have to use foobar to play my audio files. It would be really really nice, if vlc would be able to play cue + flac and cue + mp3 combinations in the future.

Thank you very much for this almost perfect and free media player :)

First of all, no need to apologize for your English. No, it is not perfect. But what passes for written American English (The very term "American English" itself grows increasingly oxymoronic by the decade.) from many so-called "native speakers" in my country is far worse!

Second, I went away from Foobar2000 in order to get away from all the geeky and arcane scripting it takes to get it to do precisely what one wants. VLC seemed like an excellent and far easier alternative. What's more, there is a Linux version - a bonus for me, since I am gradually moving away from Windows and over to Ubuntu.

But lack of proper cue sheet support will turn out to be a deal-breaker, sending me back to Foobar2000. What's worse, posts I have read from VLC people not only show a lack of acknowledgment for the importance of cue sheet support, they actually have ridiculed those of us who do think it is important.

I alway rip my music CDs twice. Once in MP3 with playlist file, and once as a FLAC image with cue sheet. The MP3s are for my portable player and my car. The FLACs are for streaming through my good home stereo system AND as a back-up for the CD should it get lost or damaged. An image file with cue sheet is the ONLY way to both preserve precise tracking information and to enable re-creation of a new CD - bit-for-bit - that matches the original, preserving seamless track transitions where they occur. With classical, opera and live concert material, this gapless playback is not just desirable, it's ESSENTIAL.

Apparently, someone besides just us thinks it is important; Logitech's excellent Slim Devices streaming audio hardware DOES support cue sheet playback! But from the tone of many in this forum, it doesn't appear that VLC will any time soon, if ever. So, back to Foobar I go!

You have to understand that our work is done on free time.
We worked a lot in better playlist/media library, APE/FLAC/ALAC better support, cover art and audio filters for next version in order to improve VLC as an audio player...

Looking quite close, I don't see any cue sheet ticket in our feature/bugtracking system...

Not much, I am afraid.
Thanks , i've checked the code about playlist , my idea is adding a new input for next item (maybe a input array but it's heavy), this input will be starting once last input is going to eof , but it's not easy , do you have any suggestion?

One problem is the seek ahead. Because playlist can store very different resources, like internet-streams, it is very hard to get proper gapless starts (specially if you try to unite two network streams with low bandwidth connection). For local playback it should work, but there needs to be certain good logic behind it if with gapless we mean no silence between song transfers with blending songs togehter. Also this (blending) will mess up DTS and AC3 playback.

Yes , it's very hard problem indeed , the problem is hard to get the proper starting. Once i have another ideas ,supposes that we only support only same format (same decode , same access , same output ...)gapless , once currently input stream had been EOF , we got next input stream to it , just like one file , is it more easy ?
Actually i tried multiple inputs playback, found VLC works , it can playback two inputs same time , powerfully!!
Waiting for your feedback or your ideas on it.

Hi All , i have a question on how to pause an input while on its beginning , since i'd like to let secondary input waiting for first input EOF then starting.

The hotkey sourcecode should show all the default stuff (play, pause, stop etc.)

I mean can i pause input in the right time before just audio output , i think this is important point to getting playback.

Actually I tried to pause at the right time before audio output (audio_output/dec.c)
but other threads are running(once it received starting signal , all paused audio had been skipped) , and treat audio output is failed , i can hardly pause all stuffs running at right time.

Does anybody interest on lossy audio gapless playback discussion , after study on gapless I found lossy audio gapless playback is very hard , since the decoder may generate a litter "gap" between two inputs (Check this link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gapless_playback) . But foobar & iTunes confuse me , their lossy audio gapless is perfect , how did they make this?
