The most annoying behavior of the volume bar

Postby cxn » 16 Jan 2008 01:54

Hello devs!
Current volume bar is very naughty -- behavior can be more intuitive and user friendly.

Please
(1) make the volume bar in the default skin scalable (liquid)
(2) force current volume to display in one solid block (not the default green blocks)
(3) change the look when muting

Thanks for the great player

VLC version: OVER 9000!!!
Operating System: It's...blue screen
Location: Heaven? No no. What's that other place that starts with an "H"? Oh yes: Home. ^_^

Well I don't know if you know this but the picture is cut off so we can't even see your alternative. :P Aside from that the volume slider has already been changed in the development builds. Who knows, it may undergo even further changes. :)

No the volume bar in the development version is definitive. It might become smaller, but that is it.

What do you mean by "cut of''? There should be 4 vlc-windows: 2 before and 2 after in the gif.

Maybe it's just my computer. I use Firefox and this isn't the only time pictures have been cut off. Here's how it looks for CloudStalker:

I've checked the latest builds and the new volume bar is definetely better than old default bar.

Default GUI has changed for better from 0.8.6 which I am using now.

There volume bar can still be improved slightly in the new version:
the color of the volume triangle can change to lightgray when I press 'mute' so the current muted volume is visible.

Yes, you are right, it could be better, however, it is more complex, and not priority. Fill a feature request in trac, please.

I am pleased to know that you prefer this bar from the older one.

That's probably an XP problem, because in Windows 2000 it's displayed in a solid block.

I really don't care if it is an XP problem. There is really no good reason to use progress bar to change volume. Newest volume bar is better but it too has major flaws (e.g. draging volume outside the bar).

I disagree it has major flaws.
Draging volume outside the bar is normal. Why so ? Because it consider that if you drag the slider and keep it drag away, this is because you didn't want it.

Ok, I see your point. However the most intuitive way to increase volume to the maximum is to click volume bar and drag it outside the windows to the right. Same thing with decreasing: point to the volume bar, click and drag outside volume bar to the left. I clicked on the volume bar so why vlc assumes I didn't want it?

Also draging shouldn't be limited vertically. 0.8.6 works well in this fashion and e.g all major products from Adobe

Nice :) It would be awesome if the range would equal screen size.

Moreover, If I clic on the volume bar and change my mind, If I drag outside, I keep the same volume level, which is good.
