downloading audio to VLC

I apologise if this question has been answered I am 73 and not a whizz kid. I have swirched from Windows Media Player to p[lay my CD' s and put them on m,y IPOD. how do I download my cd's? they play fine but after that I do not know how to make playlists. Can any of you good guys help and old Gadgy.
