I run a site called media.io where you can convert audio files online. media.io uses many Open Source software packages like oggenc, ffmpeg, mplayer, wavpack... and soon vlc to convert tracker formats.
Looking forward to adding VLC to the list of tools I use.
JFTR: On my desktop boxes I use Exaile as my music player though because I like having more than one playlist.
