:D :P  I'm not at all sure if I'm late on this but here goes.

I'm using the following:

OS: Win XP Latest updates ( don't judge, I'm saving for a win 7 pc)
Hardware: Dell Latitude D600

VLC Version: 1.1.5

Skinned: Yes, using ' default.vlt ' skin the one that came with the player.

1. I copied the YouTube video url,

2. Accessed the ' Open Media ' Window

3. Clicked the network tab

4. Pasted the url in the ' Please enter a network url: ' box

5. Clicked the play button

6. Youtube video played

What I was able to do to the video:

Use all video options, Use all audio options, use graphic eq, use all Standard Effects and filters.

VLC is wonderful but for me Real Player is a better tool for saving YouTube videos.
A button for saving is added above top right of the video. If pressed, the video
is downloaded to one's disk. That is a separate process so you don't have to
stay to watch the whole on-line video.
