converting files to dvd format

Postby docw » 04 Oct 2010 19:06

I suspect the answer to this question is somewhere in your system but I am not v.g at this sort of problem...

I have a film on my hd which is in avi format and with it there is an str (subtitles) file.
Using VLC Media Player I can view the movie on my pc quite easily and the subtitles are displayed as you would expect.

How do I convert these files to a format that will allow me to play the movie on a DVD player AND to show the subtitles as well?

Hope you can solve this for me.

Many thanks

And decent and recent DVD player should be able to play MPEG-4 ASP video (DivX and Xvid) with MP3 audio in an AVI container and to play SRT subtitles as well. However a common limitation is that the width of the video must be =< 720 pixels.
Some free and open source tools such as AviDemux can help you to easily make such files. Make sure to give the subtitles file the same name as the video file like this:
MyVideo.avi
MyVideo.srt

Another possibility is to convert and author the file to a real DVD format and DVD Flick, free and open source too, can do this.
