3D MPEG4?

Does anyone know whether there are any specifications for 3D video in MPEG4?

I would imagine a general implementation would be simply to have two video tracks that can either be displayed interleaved or played simultaneously, depending on shutter glass or polarized viewing, but the issue is how the tracks would be identified so players can know when track is which.

I don't have any more information than that at this point.

BTW I have created a ticket (ticket 4183) for anyone who wants to look into adding support for this in VLC.

Edit: I have been doing some more hunting around for information on MVC and 3D video technologies in general. The first document (PDF) talks about 3D video technologies in general:

and makes references to the "5th Edition of the ITU-T Rec. H.264 | ISO/IEC 14996-10 Advanced Video Coding (AVC)" standard, which includes extensions for multiview video coding (MVC). To quote:
The 5th Edition of the ITU-T Rec. H.264 | ISO/IEC 14996-10 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) standard, which will be published soon, includes extensions for multiview video coding (MVC). The Multiview High Profile is specified in this edition of the standard, which utilizes existing high-profile tools (excluding interlaced) for inter-view predic- tion to achieve improved compression of stereo and multiview video. Signaling of scene acquisition information (i.e., camera parameters) and multiview scene information (i.e., maximum disparity) is also specified. Such metadata may be used for 3-D display processing. MPEG is also in the process of developing an amendment of AVC that stan- dardizes additional capabilities in the context of 3-D.

I don't know anything about standards, but there was a demonstration 3D DVB-T channel in Australia a few months ago. The video stream was 1920x1080 h264 with the left and right frames side by side, i.e. two 960 x 1080 frames side by side.

what about the file format of MVC, is it finalized?
