proxy with authentication

I have a question. I need to use VLC with a proxy that requires authentication. I enetered the proxy info in VLC, but there is no place to enter my name and password, and, unlike mediaplayer or a browser, vlc does not pop a window asking me for that information. How do I use vlc with a proxy that requires authentication?

Try setting the proxy to
username:password@proxy
(Don't know if that will work though)
