IPTV Set Top Box emulation

Hey everyone,
I've been using VLC for quite a while to watch IPTV that my local network provider broadcasts via UDP. The quality is really great, and I recently bought an HDMI cable to connect the VLC laptop to my LCD TV. It worked nice, except the annoying fact I always need to reach out to the laptop to switch a channel.
So I'm wondering, is there any way to have my TV populate its digital channel list with the ones available from the VLC SAP playlist? That would be really convenient as one would be able to access both regular and IPTV channels from the single remote control unit. Of course, until the VLC laptop is off
I'm sort of a newbie to this, but it seems like I'm looking for an STB software emulator. This may sound fair as STB is ultimately a small computer with some software in it. I have three laptops in my house, so I'd rather dedicate one instead of buying a new piece of hardware. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks!
