Conversion settings

Is there a thread or listing of some kind on how to do video converting. I really hate the trial and error method, and logical settings don't seem to work. I want to convert flv (flash video) to something... anything, that can be watched on my DVD player in the living room.

Using all mp4 settings does not yield a viewable result. Sometimes I get audio that is not synced with the video after the 3 minutes.

Any suggestions or tips appreciated.
