Wondering how to rip AVIs to DVD format

I am new to VLC and dvd recording. I have that hardware just wondering what software people recommend for burning DVDs. I would prefer to use freeware and found a software package called InfraRecorder.

When I try to burn a avi file with InfraRecorder it can't find the file. It states that the file must be in a folder called Video_TS.

My intent is to burn the avi for use with my dvd player hooked up to my TV. The avi plays fine on my laptop but don't want my kids watching their shows on my laptop all day.

Any help would be appreciated.

Forgot to note that I am using Windows XP Pro SP2.
VLC for video playing.
DVD software right no InfraRecorder but taking recommendations that are free or opensource. But if I have to pay I will.

Converting the aspect ratio is a topic onto itself. Leaving that aside and concentrating on the freeware tools: AviSynth VirtualDub-MPEG2 QuEnc DVDAuthorGUI ImgBurn BeSweet VirtualDubMod for audio. These are free and versatile, but not a one click solution. I enjoy studying the DVD format itself, so I have no problem using these tools. Try reading the DVDFAQ.
