How to read source code of videolan???

i just only make few projects on windows with c, but recently i discover the videolan, i am very interest in it, so wants to read source code ,starts from Older versions , but which oldest version can be complied on windows? is the code use winapi? some of the files in version 0.1.99 i have not seen yet on windows!!! How to do??? Help !!! i have not used linux or other os!!!!
