"Windows Vista was launched a few weeks ago and is selling poorly. I will not comment here on the bugs, the security issues and the other horrors that you may find with Vista...
Vista has a new Drivers model and a new graphic output stack and a new graphic interface, based on DirectX10. For VLC, this means that the video modules may not work correctly, may not show at all... This is a shame, and this is a Driver problem, a Vista problem and a VLC problem. "
I would question your statement that Vista is not selling well as it is used or will be used on every new PC for years to come and PC's have over 90% world marketshare (as compared to OSX with less than 3% world marketshare).
I'm running Vista and it is extremely stable, smooth as silk and a terrific operating system.
I think you don't have a Driver problem or a Vista problem, you have a VLC problem and if you truly want to make VLC cross platform maybe you better get to work.

I think you are way off base and need to get your facts straight before making comments here.
FYI With every new version Microsoft has attacked someone or something driving a few companies into bankruptcy and then buying them for pennies. This is the first time it seems to be everyone and everything with NO backward compatibility. But as I have said in other posts the real issue is Video and Audio drivers. Most companies have gotten tired of paying Microsoft to bless their drivers for every new or updated release of DirectX (WHOL certified). Moving Audio and Video support out of the Kernel will make the OS more stable, but introducing a new DirectX version at the same time means trouble. Until the driver issue is resolved and working drivers for Vista become a reality everyone that does NOT understand the issues will continue to point the finger at the program that crashes the system. But some time ago Microsoft fixed this, Programs do NOT crash a system, drivers do when they are asked to do something they can not do and in this case it becomes a system problem. The one thing this situation should accomplish is to bring everyone back into Microsoft's DirectX fold with signed drivers.
It has been announced that Microsoft will NOT wait 5 years till the next release. (See j-b links.) If, for example, we go back to the once a year to every other year for new Windows releases, who do you think stands to benefit the most? How many more business will Microsoft drive under or buy for pennies on the dollar? Can our economy afford to do this (with the modest gains we see after 5 years of XP with Vista)? Vista is Certainly NOT what I would have expected it to be and as I have been reading, over the last few months anyone else. It just comes up short. But it's not short in the space it takes up, in the speed of the machine it runs on, the required memory and etc. In this area Microsoft as always makes a fast machine look slow and even more so with the amount of protection we need to pile on because Microsoft doesn't create a system that is secure.
BTW Microsoft employs a think tank dedicated to doling out the technology. The object is to do this as slowly and steadily as possible and at the same time make it look (cutting edge) as slick as possible. These candidates are chosen each year from our nations top universities and most of them don't last the first few months because of the competitive nature of the think tank.

Why you want to keep making a Windows version, if nothing is good about it?? Better put some more effort and time in the Linux or MAC version !

Hmm! Not a bad idea! But I would think allot of users would be very upset. Don't you?

Yes! I for one would be very upset!
But hopefully the developers aren’t considering this. I know Windows has its fare share of problems (believe me, I know), but I’m confident that soon there will be a solution to all Windows related problems… Ok not really.
And DJ, why of all people are you turning against Windows? I know for a fact that you’re usually answering questions in the “VLC media player for Windows” topic. Think of how little there would be for you to do on this forum if they eliminated support for Windows.
What was this thread about again?
Oh and sorry for the overuse of smilies.

We are a bit bored about Vista. But well, it will improve as soon as developers have Vista.

Didn't mean to imply that I hate Windows. (We will let the developers speak out on that topic.) But I do hate some of the ethic behind the way Microsoft uses it for control and I'm not talking about computers. I also doubt the developers of VLC will ever drop Windows from the list of supported operating systems. What I do suspect is there will be a Vista compatible VLC version, but it is doubtful to happen until the dust settles with video cards and drivers. In the mean time this sticky was intended to help users understand some of the issues and hopefully get them a working VLC or at very least a semi working VLC.
This discussion or post has gotten way off topic
Even though that is not what was intended here.

Ok. Until I have Windows Vista, or have something informative to say about it, I will stop posting here, sorry for getting off-topic.
How can I end this well? Ahh… VLC for Vista!

I posted this in the other vista topic but since it said it was moved I will post it again here.
I got VLC to work with my 32bit version of Vista. I changed the video output to DirectX and unchecked the other option that was suggested. It works now! The weird thing is that everytime I open the player Vista changes my windows theme to classic because the player is not compatible with the current system settings...once I close VLC the theme is restored to its original settings. I dont much care about it...just funny that it happens.
My dual core is at 25% on both cores when watching a .mkv file. I dont know if that means anything but thought I would share anyways.
Thanks for the help!

DJ, j-b and the rest.
Look...why doesn't VLC simply get out of the Windows development field?
You obviously don't have any interest in Vista...and like I said, Vista will DOMINATE world market share in the years to come. If you don't think so, you are simply fools.
So, get out of the whole VLC development for Windows area! You have no interest in it, why waste our time with your lack of effort.

You are right, the developers do NOT have an interest in Vista. They have real jobs that pay the bills. VLC is not doing this for them as it is FREE. So why do you think these people would donate time and effort to offer YOU something free? Labor of love perhaps? There is no advertising here and VLC does NOT contain any viruses, addware or spyware. Vista on the other hand costs money and is buggy. Go looking on a variety of sites and I tend to believe you will be hard pressed to find one who hasn't had to update for Vista or is in the process of updating for Vista of is talking about needing to update for Vista and this isn't just in Multi-Media Players it's everywhere. So I suggest you get down off your high horse and start walking on 2 legs here. It will happen in time as more of the developers buy and install Vista. Also I would like to remind you that VLC is an open source project dedicated to furthering the open source community. Certainly NOT like the pay per year antics of Microsoft or others.

Imagine: Windows open source. Wasn’t that called Lindows?
The only reason Windows is so dominant is because its developers have molded our minds. We’re made to believe that it is the only operating system; the alpha and the omega of OSes. It’s a government conspiracy, WAKE UP PEOPLE!
Seriously though, I’ve only seen a glimpse of Windows Vista, but from what I have seen I’m not yet convinced that it’s worth the cost. Maybe if it dropped 3 or 400$ then I might consider buying it one day.

Are you proposing to buy a Vista copy for us? That is so nice from you!
damienf would like the Business edition.
Are you deaf or something ? Noone said that we don't care about Vista, we just said that you will need to wait for next version to have support. Come on! last version of VLC was out when Vista was NOT out. So, just wait for new version.
There are a lot of programs that are professionnal ones and that are not Vista compliant. VLC is free, done on free time, when we have time. Noone is paid for it.
So, get out of the whole VLC development for Windows area! You have no interest in it, why waste our time with your lack of effort.
So what ? What does this mean ?
Yesterday on IRC, there were a bunch of guys, running Vista (nvidia7600GS and ATI X1600) that were running VLC with Aero activated... So maybe it is not VLC's fault... but some drivers...
If we waste your time, don't use VLC, it is free software, open source, made on our FREE time, with no founding, no money and no job. Lots of profesionnal uses VLC but noone is ready to employ one of us to improve it, nor to offer a Vista version...

I agree with the moderator. I'm running Windows Vista ultimate, I can't say it's worth the money I paid for it, at least for the moment. I have an Nvidia card and there aren't any fully functional drivers. All my videos that look great in XP look terrible in vista, with jagged edges. I have to admit, i've been using Vista for a couple of months...it's actually a lot more stable than i thought it would be.

Hi, haven't tried Vista yet, but recently bought a laptop that came with XP Home. The same model changed to pre-installed Vista. The manufacturers forum has gone wild, many people have found out how incompatible and slow vista is, and are asking how to change to XP. Most have no computer background and are totaly helpless. This is bad for Microsoft.
In the recent computer boom, many have woke up using (learning) Win XP, and Microsoft is going to have big trouble to get these users to change to something new, for better or worse.
Like they say in spanish: "mas vale malo conocido que bueno por conocer".
