VLC based player

Hello there, I'm not that clever and I would like a little advice please. I want a box that sits next to the big TV we have and connects to our home network to access our store of films on our PC in another room and play them back using VLC with a remote control. And VLC needs to be able to keep updated or allow us to update it from PC. How do we do this simply & cheaply please.
