spent 5 hours editing 2000 mp3 files, only to find there was no "save" button, and all my work was for naught. HATE VLC

what do you mean editing? both vlc and windows media player are used primarily for playing

That would be in "player" in the name VLC media player.
You should edit mp3 with picard.
