Windows Media Player and VLC .dll files

I am new here so bear with me please. I used Windows media player (WMT) in Windows 10 to play my videos for a long time but it just stopped working. Tried to repair it by following the recommended procedure of unchecking the media player box in the Windows playing features window from the control panel, rebooting, checking the box and rebooting again. Did not work.
I would like to be able to use WMP as well as VLC. Is there another way to uninstall and reinstall WMP or repair it in some fashion without damaging VLC (dll or other files common to both)??
Any help would be appreciated

VLC uses its own internal codecs and has nothing to do with WMP system files.
So fiddling with WMP should not alter VLC in any way.
