Are there any good freeware programs that can batch convert a bunch of H.264 files into AVI files?

Yes, I'm aware of ffmpeg and MEncoder.

But what I'm looking for is a really nice GUI, that I can load a bunch of H.264 files into and churn out AVIs.

There must be something out there that works well and is free...

Simplicity is bliss...

The first to try is always MPEG Streamclip

The only program that has worked so far is:

AVIGenerator.exe

but I can't find a batch version (or command line version) of it...

I have never had any problems opening h264 encoded videos with MPEG Streamclip - doing it just about daily - either in avi or mp4 containers.

By the way, you cannot convert h264 to avi, h264 is a codec, avi is a container - two different things

That's right.
But there are some "H264" files out there that are created by security cameras etc.
These can use proprietary codecs that aren't recognized by AviDemux or MPEG Streamclip.
