I couldn't see using all those players. I'm trying to cut back myself. I personally use VLC and Winamp the most, Real Alternative for RA media and WMP for WMA/V files.

If VLC had Winamp like features or "feel" I could probably ditch it. I just find myself using Winamp to loop beats, cause I'm into scratching and converting batches of mp3's to wav's even though I can use a proper audio editor to do that I find it pretty easy to do within Winamp.

Do you know that you can use WMP9/10 dlls in VLC for WMA/WMV files to have the same quality ?

When I've tried playing WMV files in VLC they appear really pixelated and after a few seconds of play time they then look fine. But if I forward or rewind that pixelation comes back, that's why I chose to stick with WMP for those files. I would describe it as VLC tries to decode the WMV file and once it figures it out it works. Is this an issue with those dlls? How do I get those? Where do I put them?

Add --codec dmo to your command line or shortcut to start VLC.

I've no idea what that means. :) That's probably a linux command.

No! It's a Windows command as Linux does not natively support either Direct Show or Windows Codecs.

The --codec dmo switch can be added to a VLC shortcut where the command would read: "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --codec dmo

or from your Run menu or from a DOS box, but the complete path to VLC must also be entered, like:
"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --codec dmo This command example assumes that VLC is in the default directory.

The switch allows Windows DMO codecs to be used for WMv or WVC-1 instead of FFmpeg.

Ahh, I see. :) Thanks. Ok, I've done it. This stuff is new to me, is this something I need to run once or each time I launch VLC?

Ok, I ran that command and launched a few .wmv files and still get that pixelation/green muddy looking mess. On one it ran fine, but on other still forwarding and rewinding yields pixelation.

The threads here do not indicate if the files are WMv1 2 or 3? In the case of WMv1 or 2 the blocky tendency which you are calling pixelization is normal for a format where the key frames are spaced to far apart. VLC does NOT search to the nearest key frame when seeking within a file, therefore it can take several seconds or a scene change for this to resolve. Many of the newer encoders are placing I frames at or near the frame rate for the video. This yields much better seeking performance as in WMv3 for HD material.

I just answered the question as to how to use the Windows DMO codecs instead of FFmpeg, but I did NOT indicate this would resolve the issue.

That reminds me, where did DJ go? I first noticed that he was missing when I was actually able to get a couple of comments in on the "VLC media player for Windows" topic without the usual long line of "DJ already answered" threads. :P Anyway it's good to hear that your thread is going so well, mine is not doing too bad either. :)

well, I was off studying, hence my spending no time here at VLC forums... Doom9 and HydrogenAudio forums are fun too, you must check them.

As for DJ, concidering his age, I hope nothing bad has happened to him.
