Does anyone know how to .....

Postby CharlieT » 20 Aug 2006 16:44

Hello.

I am requesting some assistance and, if this is the wrong forum, my apologies and please redirect this request to the appropriate forum.

You folks have such a terrific and versatile product which works when no other will. Hard to beat that.

I do have a problem in that some AVI files which I have will not open on other players, for example, Win MP11, and DivX, but will play on VLC after a corrective measure is applied.

When the files are opened using VLC Media Player, an error message appears:

"AVI INDEX

The AVI file is broken. Seeking will not work correctly.
Do you want to try to repair it (this might take a long time)?

YES NO CANCEL"

Selecting YES begins the repair mode and after a few seconds, the file opens and plays.

This is all well and good and reveals just how remarkable VLC is.

My only problem is that there appears to be no way to save the repaired file requiring that the above procedure be reprised each time the file is played.

Is there a reason for this? A way to circumvent this? Or is there a "File save as ..." option to be provided for in the future?

Thank you for any assistance and clarification you may provide.

Ciao!

Hello,

It is currently not possible, because we are only able to fix it in memory, our AVI file writer does not work correctly at the moment. However, we are currently improving it, it might be possible to offer a "Save" option in a future version.

Thanks for your interest

Quel dommage!!

Merci beaucoup for your quick reply. I will truly hope and wait for the future version that will contain that fix.

Au revoir.

BUMP!

Yea, can you just ad the option in the prefs to just default the fixing of the so called AVI Error to "YES" and not ask as it makes playlists useless :-(

Please let us know if you can do this now as I can't see anything in the prefs that allow this.

Great program!

As mentioned in about 1000 other forum threads, this has already be changed in the developement version :)

and again, sorry for re-asking?

But "changed" in the "development section"???

How does that translate in regards to a next release date? There's no link to a "development section" or "development version" anywheres...

http://nightlies.videolan.org provides builds of the developement version. These are highly unstable.

Nifty!

Well as long as there are no viruses in them, hey, what the heck -
Thanks for clearing that up - DLing latest now and hopefully it will have this fix... without too many other bugs.

OMFG - you were so not kidding - horrid builds! Buggy - crashes - locks up - hahaha - I'll wait. Too bad - it's such a simple fix that can make the current version so much more appealing.
