Hmm...

According to the german wikipedia, one day several students of the École Centrale Paris, who were also members of a networking club, came home drunk and had brought a traffic cone. Later, the VideoLAN projekt was created by members of that club, and when they were looking for a logo, they chose the traffic cone, obviously as a reminiscence.

Whether that story is true or not, I like it. :)

Because the developers (workers) are located in Cone, France. (As are Handbrake's.) :geek:

And an ice-cream cone would have implied they were always kicked back eating dessert, whereas a
traffic cone implies they are always doing some construction.
HINT: My common VLC-usage is to transcode (via 'sout') to add on-screen 'Marquee' info,
and for that, I still use VLC v2.0.5, since marquee metadata-expansions ($-symbols) work there.

[ The VLC-version 2.x code beyond 2.0.5 remains 'broken' for that marquee functionality, tho there IS
an open and accepted bug-report on that...i.e. ticket #9514 ]

@JB: I feel the VLC team came up with the "traffic cone" accounting to 2 wants

1. Symbolize something that streams and regulates Internet traffic (for Audio/Video) well (That's why the Traffic cone which helps regulate the vehicle traffic).
2. A symbol that looks like it could be plugged into our ears (That's why the cone shape) --> (Added this one after your previous hint of "something to do with the cone shape" :P ) :!:

Please let me know if I am correct :?:

Why VLC logo is traffic cone

Postby manojpillai » 13 Jul 2016 09:22

One day the people from via association, part of a free open source project came back drunk with a traffic cone. Later, when the project is done, they used the cone as its logo. And that project is so called VLC :D :D   :P

My guess is that they used the cone as a funnel for their drinking 'events' and thus it had star status among his peers.

hmm.. i might believe that drunk story.. that never gets old on anything. if i would build my empire and it was developed during my drunk days holding a piece of cone - i will stick to that icon - as it represents my hardships during the time i was developing the uber kickass proggy.
