WMP true replacement

Postby Tsht » 06 Oct 2012 13:45

Hello.
Nice to meet you (as it's my first post here :) )

To present abruptly, I searched since some days on the Internet a way to replace WMP I never encountered the need before. As a last resort, I'm asking here if some people have the knowledge on a way to bypass apps or games who would need WMP.

I just bought a new game on my Windows's PC : Fifa 13. As certain may be aware or not, there is a really annoying bug in it : you can't play it if Windows Media Player is not installed :(
But the other annoying thing is that I never checked WMP on my window's install, using of course VLC :) and MPC with k lite. I really have a regular bought, genuine version of Windows 7, but WMP just won't install, crashing me some generic error. I didn't want to install it, and I can't neither (I won't reinstall my windows for this minor problem...).

I looked into the game folder, movies are regular vp6 ones.
To be honest, I don't care about these movies, I just want to play this game with some of my friends, and there is no patch yet so as somebody who like to program I'm searching a workaround.

I know it's not an EA support forum here, and I have more of a question for some geeks or developpers like me : is there any way to "fake" the presence of WMP ?
I suppose there are some calls in the game which would use a WMP dll code (which would not be present), hence I asked myself if some peoples who like playing with Windows API (gulps) won't have figured a way to have an hook on Windows Media Player code..Or any way to "really" replace WMP. Maybe it's just not possible.

Thanks if anyone has in interest in this, and have a nice week-end.

If your game is looking for the Windows Media runtimes I know nothing that could replace them.

You can't install WMP11 on Windows 7, your only hope is to install this:

Make sure to stop any Windows Media related service before trying to install. But in case of more troubles your best bet is to ask for help on some Windows dedicated forums such as the Microsoft Community ones.

Too bad other runtimes don't exist. A compatible interface with WMP.dll would be really nice (if it was possible...).
As a quick fix I copied wmp.dll and wmploc.dll, then registered wmp.dll with regsvr32. It's sufficient to be able to play the media.
You link is only for some versions of Windows (not for mine).

But thanks.
