Is ripping video from disk illegal?

Postby Locorameriz » 16 Aug 2012 23:50

I have about 40 music dvd’s which I purchased, what I wanted to do was rip them to disk and then I could have a 400+ track random playlist.
I did manage to do it but I kind of got the feeling it wasn’t legal even though I had bought the disks, so naturally I had to download a program which wasn’t quite right but it all sort of worked out in the end.

Some countries allow one private copy as a backup but some other ones don't. So check the applicable law in your country.

Thanks, I can understand it being illegal if you are uploading them, selling or passing them around but surely I should be able to rip my own disks so I can view them as I want.

To do it was a major problem as many programs can rip a disk but they can’t separate the tracks into individual files.
I did do it about 4 years ago so it has probably all changed by now as this industry advances very fast.

I know VLC can rip dvds but am not sure if it can rip them into individual tracks, must find out as I have bought some new ones and want to do the whole thing again but this time properly.
I love random play music and without ripping them into individual tracks it is impossible to enjoy my collection as I want to.

That really and entirely depends on the laws in your country. Where are you located?

I’m in the UK so there should be no problem as bankers and government ministers are allowed to steal millions.
That said the way things are these days ripping your own disk is probably a big no no whereas lying and cheating are fine!

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, making a private copy of copyrighted media without the copyright owner's consent is currently illegal,[4][5] but the UK government's new Digital Economy Act is likely to make copying of CDs for personal use legal.[6] According to one survey, 59% of British consumers believed ripping a CD to be legal, and 55% admitted to doing it.[7][8]
Have to wait then...

As for the other discussion, politicians have followed extensive training and then are well-paid to do just that... Most of them anyway....

Good humour thanks.

Well I have done a little bit of research and found that VLC player cannot rip individual tracks off a music DVD?
They say another program has to be used which really confuses me but as to the legality of it, if they ever raided my house I could produce every dvd so I don’t think it is a real problem.

I really need one program to do it because when you have to use a couple and you get vob files and all that something always goes wrong for me.
I can’t understand why VLC cannot do it, but then I’m clueless when it comes to such things.
