Streming AUDIO in real time, what do i need?

Hi guys,
not an expert in all these protocols just a musician. I want to try doing some experiments for an installation
would like to stream audio in real time through two computers and have the feeling VLC can do that,
only i dont' know how and what i need.
Any help?
